For Reserves everyone does Phase 1a together no matter what job they want to do. This takes a week or a few weekends. Phase 1b is either 20 continuous days or the same number of days over weekends. This is the very basic stuff everyone needs to know.

Then everyone goes their seperate ways to learn specialist skills. For everyone barring the Infantry, this is where they learn technical stuff and large bits of equipment. Infantry learn how to do the aforementioned basics but properly, because its their job. Fire and manouvere, marksmanship, urban combat, demolitions, specialist weapons, anti tank, sniping, parachuting, long marches and so on.

Everyone gets taught the minimum but Infantry do a far more nuanced and complex combat infantrymans course afterward.

If you're the cerebral type medic or Intelligence is ideal. It's a second career, gives very good experiences and quals that you can use elsewhere and you will do very interesting work.

Inf is great if you're just wanting a bit of a thrill every now and again. Obviously there's opportunity for tours and such (and the standard exercises abroad) but you won't really do a lot in the off time.

Do you get paid while you learn to become a medic?

You get paid for every drill night you attend and all training and courses. Medics may get more, I don't know. You also get a £300 bonus on completion of ADSC (2 day selection everyone has to do). Finishing Phase 1a and b gets you a thousand pounds tax free, as does finishing phase 2. You also get reinbursed for all travel to and from your unit. Every weekend you do away is paid too. Your unit will give you a run down of pay.

In your first year, assuming you get everything finished, you're looking at about 5k tax free. It's a good rate. Subsidised bars at every unit, too.

Advice:
Go donate blood and get your donor card you haven't already.
Have a shave and get some passport photos done wearing a plain t shirt
Run distance frequently
Learn job role and locations, bit of Army history

It's comfy and if you go medic you will not regret it. I didn't, but I know lots that did and they all love it.

To be a combat medic in the Army? About a year for what we're talking about. You wouldn't do the complicated stuff for a few years though as far as I know and most of the people doing it as reservists have civilian medical careers.
