First off, cause the baseball season is so packed, players have to wait for the offseason to squeeze in stuff like filming commercials or appearing on TV. Yes they can and do this during the season, but it's tough to fit it in between training and games and traveling.

Then there's the effect of aggrandizing a player's ego. You make them feel too important and it can go to their heads. You see this in any other team sport where individuals are emphasize in the media.

I do agree that the MLB, with its rather large media/marketing, can and should do more to promote the game and its stars. There's plenty of great young players right now, and MLB should take advantage.

The whole bat-flipping thing is petty imo. It's funny to see people get so butthurt by it. Let the players show emotion and celebrate when appropriate. If a player is being needlessly arrogant, then feel free to throw a fit (journalists) or throw at them (pitchers).
