as someone who grew up 300m from the arena I have a pretty good idea.

first off there are (were) already two very big teams in the area. if you look at the map espoo is just a suburb of helsinki separated into its own "city" for bureucratic reasons. I was about 10 when blues got into SML and I was already an IFK fan so despite loving hockey and literally living right next to the arena I rarely went there unless IFK was playing. most people my age and older felt the same, you don't just abandon your old team because a new team pops up closer.

secondly the business side was always very sketchy. it was owned by a guy who was more into money than hockey and saw it as a business venture rather than a sports club. he treated fans like shit and just wanted to get the most money out of the arena. then he sold it to some foreign investors until I think he bought it back? I'm not sure. anyway the people I knew who were involved in the organization (juniors) always talked how the whole operation stinks of someone trying to cash in rather than a club with history. because the ownership bounced around it was always "in progress" and things were decided year to year instead of having a solid plan like the older clubs do.

You don't need math to be a "winner". It's good to have a good basic understanding of mathematics but all the university level stuff is purely for people working explicitly with mathematics. 9th grade math will leave 98% of the jobs open to you.

already ahead of much of the class. i did the same. as good as sign as any, plus it really helps you out a lot. and it really is like you describe, mostly a lot of reading and occasional writing and presentations.

if you read a lot on your own time you probably have developing the skills for history to some extent or another. namely, analysis and drawing out the relevant information. try to build a solid base on what you already know, and branch out from there. also despite it being just so enjoyable, it still requires work, but its all great. history is crazy to begin with and once you get even further into the details it just gets more so.

man, word! i was decent at both those and still felt drawn towards history. i got into it for the incredible stories of individual men and civilizations, and stayed for the intricate depth. both are still present.
