Has halfpenny ever created anything on the wing ever? Williams is the better fullback but he can play winger better
>>
>>74114740
He honestly looks better attacking from wing than fullback. He is a good straight-line runner with a decent inside step, but that's it really. When someone like that runs from fullback, you get something that looks about as effective as Rob Kearney. But on the wing it's all you need. I'd be tempted to start Steff Evans over Halfpenny but I'm not too sure of Sam Davies's goal kicking range. He's a good kicker, but Halfpenny has more legs.

Also, Halfpenny and Williams can quite easily switch based on whether we're attacking or defending. if England drop bombs on us we should be passing between the two anyway to beat the kick chase, so it's pretty academic. Williams at 15 gives Sam more options to bring to the line
>>
>>74114265
I'm not Afrikaans lad, also, at least my country let's us play rugby before we are teenagers
>>
>>74114835
Kearney had 2 clean breaks and beat 7 defenders at the weekend, he was Ireland's best back three player by a mile, which isn't saying much though

Williams is the better finisher, the better finisher goes on the wing. As you said both are going to have to return and counter anyway as England will kick a lot

> try against Canada on the wing means he will be effective against England
no

1/2p best games have all been at fullback
>>
>>74115160

To be fair Halfpenny was a good finisher at one point too.

I thought Liam Williams looked lost at sea on the wing at times on Sunday, almost Cuthbert esque on occasions. Halfpenny reads the game better and is positionally more astute.

When they swapped shirts for one game in the autumn Halfpenny had his best attacking game in years. I wonder if defenses have got the measure of him from deep and maybe he'd be better off moving to the wing to freshen things up.
>>
>>74115130
did he actually say this
>>
>>74115078
Charteris isn't as physical as Jake, and England's lineout looked shocking last week while ours was fine so I don't see any great need to rotate them. I'm a massive fan of Tips, but I think we're going to have to batter England and the Moriarty/Warburton pairing should be able to dominate Wood+Haskell. I'd not be annoyed to see Tips starting though, he is a brilliant player.
>>74115160
basically what >>74115295 saidl, Williams struggles to get involved from the wings and gets frustrated. He's a natural fullback while Halfpenny is more of a natural winger with very good defensive attributes.
>>
>>74115309

I'm paraphrasing a few quotes but he's said it all at one time or another.

In his head he things he's Jose Mourinho circa 2005, but to everybody else he comes across as a mental, rambling Aussie midget
>>
>>74115333

I have 0 faith in our lineout, our maul's were shite (didn't we concede from a maul?) and Charteris always improves our scrum. I really want him to start.

Tipuric should start because he's the form flanker in Wales this season. No point in trying to out bosh Haskell, Hughes, Itoje, Marler, Hartley etc. because we will come off second best.

We're better off picking a more mobile pack and beating them at the breakdown, which we can do. Especially if they pick belly flop Itoje at 6 again.
>>
>>74115333
>England's lineout looked shocking last week
they had one mistake early on and then for the rest of the game their line-out was fine
>>
>>74115388
>didn't we concede from a maul
Sort of, it was a quick maul formed off an attempted choke tackle. We only had one or two players in it at most.
>No point in trying to out bosh Haskell, Hughes, Itoje, Marler, Hartley
Hughes is the definition of a plum at test level, he had virtually no impact on the game last week apart from one decent carry. The more I think about it I am coming round to starting Tips because of what he brings around the park to be fair. I think both Tips and Sam struggled to get involved at the breakdown much this weekend though, apart from a couple of steals. Hopefully with Toby back they can be more assertive. Whoever England pick at 6 will be outclassed, Wood is useless and Itoje gets horribly exposed playing 6 at test level
>>
>>74115475

Tipuric isn't really a jackler at test level but Warburton will make mince meat of them at the breakdown. They don't have anybody his calibre.

Tipuric will be useful for running round like a mad cunt, and ripping the ball if we can hold up their runners. Going forwards I'm sure Eddie Jones would much rather defend against Moriarty running straight, than Tipuric jinking around and linking up with the backs.

Haskelly/Itoje/Lawes are all big units but they're not particularly mobile.
>>
>>74115574
>than Tipuric jinking around and linking up with the backs.
True, especially with Sam playing at 10 (if he does). Some of the link-up plays between the Ospreys back row and Davies this season have been ridiculous.

It's really disheartening to see the rumour that Ben Smith tested positive for PCP in 2013 being posted here. I've heard about this at length before, but it's completely unproven not to mention unfair to have his reputation dragged through the mud in this way despite having never missed a drugs tests.

It also completely overshadows the memory of that poor girl he raped and murdered whilst completely sober in 2012.

All these games are usually pretty good to watch and have good atmosphere
I always enjoy
NZ v SA or Aus
For domestic games
Chiefs v Crusaders and Hurricanes v Crusaders have both been good though at the Crusaders current home ground they are not as great as they once were. It needs to be a pretty important game to fill up the Hurricanes home stadium enough to have a great atmosphere and Chiefs home games are always pretty great.
Super rugby sides from other countries are not normally as good

I need to get down to a Highlanders home game at some point, apparently they rival Chiefs home games and from the TV it sounds like it does.

New Zealand South Africa

I was sitting behind a cute little asian family and they seemed to enjoy it too.

CASI x SIC
>>
>>74130139
ringrose was alright, hardly worse than anyone else and it was his first start in the six nations

gameplan worked decently in the second half, no?

kearney was literally our best back, apart from maybe henshaw who was decent in the second half but way below his standards

bowe is passed it but was only on the bench due to injuries (olding) and his potential to cover wing and centre given the players we had on the pitch

we definitely missed trimble though, earls was poor and zebo mediocre

scotland deserved the win for their composure and insistence in the last 10 but the truncated preparation clearly affected the irish teams performance in the first half, that said scotland took advantage of it and played well and were good in the first 30 taking nothing from them

Unironically hate Wales more. England were good cunts in the 70s, coming over twice in one year to give Ireland games. Ireland were favourites for the Championship, but Wales and Scotland refused to come to Dublin "because of the Troubles" even though no threat had been made towards them and the English team would have been the only target of an attack. I just hate the way as well, that the Welsh have been buddy-buddy with England for pretty much all of their history, barely even wanted their own Parliament, have never really sought independence, but then get all fucking chirpy at Six Nations time, booing God Save the Queen like there's some history of animosity between them. It's like a little chihuahua chirping at a Great Dane from behind a fence.

There's also the way that the fans have treated Rolland since 2011. It was the correct decision. He's the only good referee we've produced, and I'd say he was probably second best in the NH after Owens for a lot of that time. Just because a load of other refs were too pussy to enforce the rules doesn't mean that it's legal (HE COULDA DOYD). Even Warburton has admitted it was a red and Rolland still gets shit from Welsh fans even after retiring.

Then there's 2014, when they sent out Scott Williams to injure O'Driscoll in his final year (Williams injured himself in the hit and had to go off after 15 minutes, but still). Then there's the Welsh turning on the Irish, Scots and Italians to help the English and French fuck us over when the European tournaments were being restructured. The way the Welsh newspapers think the Pro12 is a conspiracy to keep the regions down, as if they need any help doing that.

Finally, there's Gatland. I know the IRFU fucked him over years ago, and he was well within his rights dropping BOD in 2013, but he's still a cunt.
>>
a problem with our defence at the weekend, firstly missing payne which is massive, and acknowledging our poor defensive organization, our defensive systems which was narrow in midfield (especially at the weekend due to the poor organization and concentration first half) was called by henshaw at 12 whereas usually Payne calls it at 13

imo it seems to favour an outside in interpretation and focus from 13 to be effective but also missing payne is fundamental

interesting to note payne was missing for argentina and the weekend, both instances where it failed
>>
>tfw there aren't IRFU and RFUI like there are IFA and FAI
>>
>>74130553
agree with this desu, don't mind gatland though

also 2011 6 Nations they won from an illegal lineout and 2013 6 Nations they won from a penalty at the very end from a ferris "tip tackle" penalty at the last minute while at exactly the same time bradley davies did an even worse warburton off the ball on ryan ffs

Toulon uses special tricks to pay their players and escape the "salary cap" (salary cap that is based on the top payrolls of the league, which makes it pointless in the first place).

Bakkies Botha was still playing for Toulon last year. Dude is almost 40. When Drew Mitchell came back from France to play in the World Cup the Wallabies put him on a crash diet because he was too fucking fat to play.

But of course they're going to pay the big bucks for names like Carter, Habana, Giteau etc.

>>
>>74140265
The team is picked on the players with the best stats in each position. We dominated Scotland in most facets but conceded embarrassingly easy tries and butchered some of our own in the red zone which the stats don't reflect. We also failed at the lineout which is a disproportionately important weapon for us due to a bad selection call in leaving Ryan out leaving us short of jumpers and Toner swamped.

Then why the fuck is he captain? If he hasn't learned it now he's never going to. He can still do the other more memey parts of captaincy, like "muh leadership," without actually being captain. You shouldn't just pick your captain based on him being your best player.

It's like Ireland having O'Driscoll as captain for years, despite having O'Connell, one of the best communicators with a ref I've ever seen, on the team at the same time. Whenever I bring this up with people, they get annoyed and talk about all his tries and his great moments for the team, but he could've still done all that without being captain.

Cuts both ways though. Warburton was/is great at being a captain, but his form as a player is way too inconsistent. On form he's one of the best flankers in the world, but off form he's anonymous. Your captain should be one of your most consistent players, which is why I think Robshaw should have stayed on as England captain.

Just appoint a vice-captain together with the captain. Have one handle the communications and one be a consistent player.

Was injured for ages and Ulster's backrow is average enough, they've definitely missed someone like him
>>
>>74151008
>chippy
>not the foremost practitioner of the aimless chip kick

I get the feeling that he's just bored and fucking about for a laff. Top lad.
>>
>Biggar and North apparently not definite starters
I think North is, but Biggar could well be a switcheroo. I'd put money on Davies starting at ten now.
>>
>>74151104
Was gonna say the Goose is the full back but he's "retired".
Chippy has memed himself out, they will probably try Lambie there or some random black guy there when Lambie tells them to fuck off.
>>

>And scrum half

>and fly half
Who is Morne Steyn?
>and team culture
Yeah true, but not as bad as 2003
>>
>>74151141
>faf is okay
Nah yeah nah
>morne
Good player, but not a competitive ten in the modern game. Suffers from the same problems that Biggar has, but without the natural footballing skill. You really need a ten who challenges the line nowadays
>>
>>74151162
Sure he is limited but the SA backline is coached terribly that playing a super basic game with Morne's boot is the only way they can be competitive, he won them the game against Australia and they would have beaten Italy if they played like that.

Faf was great for the Lions, I know Super Rugby is not the same as test rugby but the pretty much every Lions back was outstanding in SR and extremely inconsistent in test rugby (exception being Combrinck who was great for both)

err m8 compare

Mohoje, Kolisi/Alberts, Whiteley

to

Louw, Burger/Coetzee, Vermuelen

For the Boks, their backrow has to either be the best in the world or top 2 or 3 to have an effective game plan. Fortunately the one thing SA Super Rugby sides can produce is a powerful, if limited, pack

>>
>>74151228
Alberts is OK and Whiteley is good, I agree the backline is nowhere as good as it used to be, it's the weakest it's ever been but the backline is so fucking shit it's unreal.

>>74151253
12 needs to be Rohan van Rensburg, 13 is a toss up, no one looks good, Mapoe great in SR but not been good for Boks, Sharks have Esterhueizen but he is too young for now, maybe whack in Serfontein, for wing just whack in meme black player of the month. Maybe Kriel has 15, they will want Lambie there but he doesn't want to play 15
>>
>>74151344
>>74151272
I watched a couple Bulls games last season, Serfontein was very poor in all of them. I say let this Super Rugby season be a free for all and only pick on form.

> Alberts is OK

An out of form, out of fitness half injured Alberts is not OK. Whiteley would be good from the bench but had trouble fronting up last year.

kek those are specific games between two specific countries/teams
Those games will never add another country to them like the "6 nations" has. They are completely different lad

Never.

The only teams that would get relegated are ita, fra and sco, and it's better for rugby if they are playing in a top flight tournament.

"No."

6N and Division 1A can be unified into a only annual tournament:

- 4 groups with 3 teams each
- Home and away matches in each group
- Top 2 from each group goes to quarter finals
- Eliminatory stages in one match series (hosted at best campaign team)
- Relegation playoff between last ones from groups (in home and away matches) to define two relegation slots
>>
>>74152154
No one is saying it isn't possible
It just won't happen

Its more likely that the British teams get kicked out because of Brexit than a pro/rel system

That's actually the most retarded thing ever.
It's a Home Nations tournament, the continental teams are there at our leisure.

That's like saying "oh it's good we've kept Jonah Lomu on the bench because he'll be able to score when he comes on in the last 10".
>>
>biggar starting over davies again

GATLAND OUT
>>
>>74152154

How about no?

I hate when Johnny Foreigner's try telling us how we should run the Six Nations. Unless you have a European flag your opinion is going in the trash where it rightly belongs.

That also applies to Kiwi's, Aussies and Saffers by the way. Next time you tell me to include Georgia, I'm telling you to include Fiji, Samoa and Tonga
>>
>>74152305
Literally the same mantra that tried to keep Barrett from starting for NZ.
>>
>>74152319

It's just cowardice.

Picking a team you know wont lose by more than a score rather than a team you think can win the game. Players like Biggar, Roberts and Lydiate just serve as damage limitation at the moment.
>>
>>74152317
Japan is next lad
And an end goal of adding the Americas teams once they improve
>>
>>74151811
>>74152093
Pro/rel doesn't necessarily have to be automatic. I'm thinking of the 1A winner going into a playoff against France or Italy (depending on who ranked lower; maybe activate this only when either of them finishes bottom), and they get promoted only if they win.
>>
>>74152305
Davies will get charged down at least once

>>74152428

>>
>>74152491
give Georgia or, dare I say it, Japan a chance in a playoff 2 legged series then

if Italys so good they have nought to worry about
>>
>>74152509
just expand the tournament to include georgia. relegation is a surefire way to set rugby back in italy just when they're beginning to start doing something
>>
>>74152540
I don't think they have anything to worry about. They should be able to beat Georgia, if not outright cream them.
>>
Japan is a more workable idea than people give it credit, basically what you want to avoid is a team playing in Japan and then next week flying back to Europe. Say Japan has 3 home games in their first year.

A H x H x A H

Job done, the only team that would feel slightly aggrieved is Japan, but theyd be happy to just be there and maybe the last team that has to play Japan. Fatigue doesn't play that big a role anyways for a 7 week tournament.

2 home matches is even easier

A H x H x A A

>>74152540
But they're not starting to do anything at all. Theyre worse than they were a few years ago
>>
>>74152593
Georgia are literally ranked ahead of Italy by World Rugby right now. It would be close, and I'd favour a hungry Georgia to win. I certainly wouldn't expect Italy to "cream them".
>>
>>74152265
I think the purpose of the group stage is to let minnows get blown the fuck out by England and occasionally upset Scotland.
>>
>>74152540
>beginning to start doing something
What does "something" mean? "Go backwards"? Because they began to start doing that a few years ago.

Compare the scoreline between italy and wales to last year, compare the score between italy scotland last year to the score when scotland beat georgia in the autumn. just because italy are getting creamed by tier one nations doesn't mean that georgia will fare any better. georgia have a false ranking because they don't get to face that many tier 1 nations and they always win their matches against tier 3 and most tier 2. they'd still lose to italy.
The real issue is that the tier 1 nations don't want make a real commitment to growing rugby outside of the "big" markets by playing more matches against countries like georgia
>>
>>74152620
I wouldn't take the rankings as a clear indication of their strength. Italy keeps facing teams ranked well above them in the 6N while Georgia keeps facing teams ranked well below them in Division 1A/
>>
>>74152793
Trying to pretend South Africa and Argentina are within a stone's throw isn't really a feasible long term strategy, especially with South Africa rapidly becoming a post-apocalyptic nightmare. Having a few decent teams right on the doorstep for competition could only be a good thing surely?

Fiji and Samoa, Fiji particularly, aren't that far off the pace. They just need some help in their organisational structure and regular games against decent opposition to test themselves. Sending Junior All Blacks to play in the Pacific Nations Cup every year and allowing a side from each of the countries play against ITM Cup teams would help bring on those teams massively. If they improve enough, there might actually be a decent amount of competition in a small area. Add in Japan and Australia and you could have your own Six Nations in around 10 years, without having to go to the other side of the world.

Parisse's problem is that he's usually right. He get's treated like shite by the refs all the time also in Top 14, despite making valid points. He is a natural captain because of his personal aura.

In one game Stade Francais had no kicker due to injuries so Parisse opted for kick in touch. The ref said no it's a penalty kick because a player was waiting for the tee. Parisse said that he decides for the team as captain, and ref told him to shut up. That's just pure assholing.
