who should he have fought to convince /box/tards that he wasn't that bad?
>>
>>74110059
He could've been the guy to expose Pavlik and Dawson. Those fights were there for him, and although neither turned out to be as great as people thought they might be, beating them would've done wonders for Joe's legacy in America
>>
>>74110059
I quite like him but he should've bulked up to heavyweight or slimmed down to middleweight.

Or at least knocked out Froch.
>>
>>74110122

this, he should've gone to America after the Lacy fight
>>
>>74110200
but he was too big for mw and too small for hw

I wasn't into boxing at that time - have there been negotiations/talks between Calzaghe and Froch? because Froch wasn't even a world champion when Calzaghe moved to light hw
>>
>>74110375
Froch had been calling him out basically since he turned pro, but he hadn't really earned the fight yet. No one really cared about Froch before the Super Six, from what I recall
>>
>>74110059
Only plebs think he's bad
>>
>>74110660
The British boxing media overrates him though. I've heard tonnes of people unironically refer to him as the greatest British fighter ever, which is an insult to our boxing history
>>
>>74110805
When it comes to skill I would rate him that desu. Resume no
>>
>>74110836
Was he that skilled? I always thought of him as a guy who depended heavily on his athleticism. His punching form was pretty bad and he was there to be hit at times. Honestly someone like Frampton or Brook looks better schooled to me
>>
>>74110907
his work rate, stamina, speed, volume punching, how he quickly adapted to new tactics etc makes him better than any other british boxer imo.
>>
>>74111029
Honestly I don't think he's better than Eubank, Benn, Watson, Collins or Graham. They're all roughly the same level and I reckon Calzaghe would take a few losses against those guys in their primes
>>
Is Check Hook Boxing the best forum in terms of knowledge, civility, etc.? I browse Boxing Scene sometimes but it just seems full of schizophrenic niggers these days, like a Mayweather family reunion
>>
>>74111339
I think he would UD all of them easily desu, super middleweights that would give him trouble would be James Toney and prime RJJ
>>
>>74111446
I dunno, those guys are better than Kessler to me (Joe's best win), which wasn't "easy", though it was clear enough

Hopkins and McCallum in their primes would've beaten him too, though they skipped 168 in reality. Him vs. Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev would be 50-50 fights too in my book
>>
>>74111669
Funnily enough Calzaghe and Bhop were gonna fight in 2002 but Bhop ran away at the last minute
>>
>>74111776
Hopkins was still a middleweight in 2002. He ducked him in the same way Golovkin ducked Ward, I suppose. Plus he always had an overinflated sense of his own worth, he should have accepted 40% for the Jones rematch too. He still fought Joe in the end and arguably beat him

Joe's work rate dominated Hopkins after the early rounds, Hopkins knew this and tried to cheat to get points deducted off Joe. Joe landed far more punches and at a high connect percentage

>>
>>74113031
Both of them are fucking awful. How did they get to be such big stars in the UK?
>>
>>74113241
They're not big stars. Eubank is a little better known because of his father, but few people feel strongly about him one way or the other

Joshua and Haye are the only boxers I'd call big stars right now. Maybe Khan - his name is well known, but again, since he moved to America no one feels particularly strongly about him any more
>>
>>74113031

nobody likes Saunders apart from fellow gyppos
>>
>>74113302
Eubank is mentioned pretty consistently in the boxing media here. Maybe it's just because he talks so much.

Calling out Ward and Golovkin I guess is pretty easy way to get press.
>>
>>74113302
>Joshua and Haye are the only boxers I'd call big stars right now. Maybe Khan

Agreed but honestly I think Crolla does a better live gate than Khan would these days.
>>
>>74113981

Only muslims would still have any interest Khan, he's been exposed countless times and is only talked about more than Kell Brook because he did a stint in the US. If he did a PPV against anyone but Brook in this country it would be a bomb
>>
>>74114094
I mentioned Khan because I think that although few people are still interested in him, most people know who he is. A sort of passive or latent name value. Whereas Brook probably has more enthusiastic fans (i.e. people who'd actually spend money to see him fight) but most people who don't follow boxing wouldn't even recognise him on the street
>>
>>74114094
>would be a bomb
lel
>>
>>74114240
lol
>>
>>74114166

Yeah right. Khan's argument is because The Sun writes about his wife and his bullshit celebrity lifestyle sometimes this translates into PPV buys but it won't. Brook with Eddie Hearn to hype him up and sell the fight is on par with Amir Khan and it just comes down to him not wanting to get beat. Joshua and Haye are the only real stars because you can put them against anyone and it will still sell.
>>
>>74114296
brooks resume consists of a SD of Porter
>>
>>74114412

He just fought Golovkin on PPV and did very good numbers and he's with a promoter who has an exclusive contract with Sky Sports. Khan's leverage is imaginary and boils down to him refusing to do the fight unless he's over paid
>>
>>74114412
He beat a more on-form Porter clearer than Thurman did

And soon he'll expose Spence too

>he cant beat any big fighter at 147 anymore

I think Khan legitimately backs himself to be able to beat Garcia at 147 in a rematch, which is why he wants the inter-rim fight to see if Garcia beats Thurman. If Thurman beats Garcia we'll probably get Brook Khan before the end of the year, if Garcia wins Khan will probably take Garcia first and then Brook afterwards.

Eubank Jr is world level at 160, fighters like Curtis Stevens and Martin Murray would lose to him. Eubank is a great athlete who can throw big combinations and he is very good at fighting in the pocket, where he is only British level is boxing on the outside and that's why he'll come up short against Golovkin and taller super middleweights like DeGale, Groves, Ramirez.

Loma's just gonna counter him all night.

In the amateurs he only lost once, to Selimov, and then avenged that loss afterwards. It would be cool if we could say the same thing for his professional career. Plus I'd still like to see the actual proof of how far he's progressed since the first fight. I suspect it would look completely differently this time but you never know until it happens

There's no chance of it really happening. The IBO can't legitimatise itself when the big 4 have no incentive to recognise it. Eubank is an outlier in that he has name recognition to sell an IBO fight but not good enough to win one of the real 4 titles

is it possible that we'll see an amalgamation in our lifetime?
>>
>>74126935
No, if anything it'll go the other way since being able to call your fighter """"""world champion""""" has so much value they're willing to legitimise shit titles. That has already happened once in my lifetime with the WBO and you can see Eubank trying to start it with the IBO.
>>
>>74126798
>>74126563

So it is possible to do Eubank vs Ryder as long as the undercard is fairly strong. Scott Quigg is the only difficult fight to make there
>>
>>74126967

The WBC are taking a gamble with strict VADA testing, it will either legitimise them as the real title or they will be forced to walk it back when fighters just fight for other belts rather than face strict drug testing
>>
>>74126967
the maybe we can hope that we become so oversaturated with acronyms that the significance becomes diluted and people simply chase fights with higher monetary valute and belts fade into obscurity.
>>
>>74126540
How about:

Eubank Jr vs. Murray
Ryder vs. Arnfield II
Selby vs. Legrand
Galahad vs. Agbeko
Davies Jr vs. Daws
>>
>>74126935
WBC and WBA have spoken about merging occasionally but it never materialises. Maybe the IBF could get done by the FBI again and disband. The WBO could flounder when Arum dies and stops paying them bribes
>>
>>74127008
Most people are signed up now to be fair, and the WBC will always have the prestige of being the original, despite some questionable decisions lately. Not sure how much difference it will make though tbf, promoters love the current situation.

>>74127009
Yeah that's the more realistic scenario I think.
>>
>>74127023

I would probably go for it although I think that's slightly worse, remember Galahad was 1.05 odds to beat Agbeko. Doing it that way they're relying more on the main event to sell it. I'm buying into the argument that sometimes it's better to have a shit main event so the promoter is forced to put on a good undercard.
>>
>>74127058
isn't the WBA a direct spawn of the WBC?
>>
>>74127100
You're thinking of the WBO. The sort of semi-spawned from the WBA too.
>>
>>74127138
>>74127100
The IBF sort of semi-spawned from the WBA too*
>>
>>74127009
Well the problem is that so much of the belt stuff is marketed toward casual fans. There's always going to be a market for fractured titles as long as guys can hole up in their respective hometowns and sell themselves as "champs". It'd be nice if they all died a quick death but there's too much money outside the hardcore fans for that to happen.
>>
>>74127161
so quite the opposite of what I thought, the saturation is a necessity rather than a cancer.
>>
Pretty banging fight on Channel 5 for free next month, Craig Kennedy vs. Matty Askin. Honestly better than anything on the ITV PPV card
>>
>>74127198
That's not what he said at all, he said it IS a cancer but it's an inevitable cancer. Without a system like UFC where one person basically locks down the entire sport (which has its own problems) there's no way to enforce the best constantly fighting the best unfortunately.
>>

>>
>>74127100

WBA and WBC are the real belts, IBF and WBO are break aways from the WBA
>>

>Uchiyama

>>
>>74127198
>>74127241
>it's an inevitable cancer
Yeah pretty much this. I mean look at Wilder...I can certainly tell you that an undefeated record is usually cause for suspicion rather than celebration and that the WBC strap doesn't mean a whole lot by itself, but he can sell out these big arenas in Alabama marketed as UNDEFEATED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION DEONTAY WILDER. The economics of boxing are such that the biggest and most knowledgeable fans are frequently ignored because the money isn't always in the best matchups.

The UFC is every bit as problematic, even if you ignore the fact that it's a giant, corrupt monopoly they still have the exact same issue of chasing PPV numbers by marketing to people who don't follow their sport regularly. One belt isn't going to solve all the problems with boxing.
>>
>>74127406

The IBF don't take the piss with the amount of B and C titles the way the WBA do but they've both been corrupt in the past
>>
>>74127463

And the UFC has interim belts now doesn't it? So it seems like the more time goes on the more closely it follows boxing. McGregor has also given them the problem of the top fighters only wanting money fights.
>>
>>74127618
They've always had interim belts, but in the past they were rare and used exclusively in situations where the current champ was unable to fight due to injury. It's starting to shift into something more political now and the differences between the two sports are pretty minimal these days.

Woodley got jobbed with a draw not too long ago and now Demian Maia's stuck sitting around again while the UFC gives the guy the want to be champ another crack at the belt. Different path to the same nonsense.
>>
>>74127462
Doubt it. The only belt holder in 130 that I think he has good chance to beat is Davis, but I don't see the fight happening.
He has been in SFW he whole career, it would be really hard to change division at 37. But if he does, I give 0 chances with any belt holder at 135. If however he feels comfortable at 126 I think he can beat Valdez and maybe Shelby but I haven't seen enough of him to make a call.
>>
>>74127568
If memory serves the IBF basically showed up overnight after Larry Holmes got sick of dealing with the WBC. A champ's as good as his competition, none of the main titles are inherently more or legitimate I don't think.
>>
>>74126815
If junior were to win another one of the belts he'd immediately stop bragging about being ibo champ but since casuals really believe he's a world champion, he takes it everywhere
>>
>>74127288
And Mayweather probably isn't open to having one of his fighters on a top rank card

Reminder that we how have CONFIRMATION that the Furys are not only cheats but liars to boot.

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2016/8/3/12370170/boxing-ukad-issues-statement-on-tyson-and-hughie-furys-drug-test-failure

>Back in June, The Mirror put out an article where they stated that both heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury and his cousin Hughie had tested positive for nandrolone, a banned steroid. They said that this occurred in February and March of 2015, and the boxers met with UK Anti-Doping about it in September of 2015. At that time, UKAD said they wanted to investigate further according to the article.

>Both Tyson and Hughie vehemently denied the charges at the time and continue to do so, with Tyson even going so far as to say he would sue UKAD over the allegation (via the BBC) yesterday.

>This prompted UKAD to actually speak on record about the issue today. They confirm that both boxers were charged in June, but in a baffling move, they lifted their provisional suspensions today pending a hearing:

but Parker is easy to hit and has no stamina.
>>
>>74140977

Eubank has no defense, and throws wild punches. GGG would counter him.
>>
>>74140955

The first 5 rounds would probably be really good, Golovkin would invite him on to test him and Eubank is good inside. Golovkin by KO in round 10
>>
>>74141002
>The first 5 rounds would probably be really good
yeah, if you like to watch Eubank run backwards while every so often throw a hayemaker-esque uppercut or hook.
>>
>>74141002

I see GGG controlling Eubank with his jab.
>>
>>74141002
I mean yeah eubank is pretty athletic but I don't think it'd go 10 rounds
>>
>>74141020
>with his jab
he wouldn't even need to jab, he could simply walk him down because Eubank doesn't throw any jabs himself.
>>
>>74140992

That's true but he managed 12 rounds with Andy Ruiz which was as high intensity as this will be. Hughie will land the jab a lot in that fight but I don't see him really hurting Parker and rate Parkers power more. Really it's down to Parker to get inside and land clean punches or throw some overhand shots to test Hughies chin. Otherwise Hughie might get a decision in a dull fight.

>>74141020

I don't think Golovkin would give a fuck about outboxing him, I think he'd welcome a brawl. He didn't really respect Kell Brook's power then Brook hit him with a great uppercut and he just went after him more

How is his resume not close? They both beat bums, only difference is hagler had the fab four (and he still got taken to the wire by a fat lightweight kek!) While ggg has no real competition in the horizon. If golovkin moves up he can definitely be in the same league. Hagler is so overrated baka

If golovkin beats ward that'll be a better victory than hearns, who wasn't top notch at 160 anyway
>>
>>74142613

Not going to happen as he already ducked Ward. He won't be able to dominate at 168 in the way he does at 160
>>
>>74142676
+ weren't there rumours of Ward retiring after Kovalev?
>>
>>74142676
164 is pretty fair imo, even tho I think champions should fully move up in weight classes. Also how did he dominate 160? Beat literally one champ
>>74142524
I just noticed baka in my post. Pretty sure I didn't type that
>>
>>74142739
Shoot, forgot about rubio, but cmon he's a bum. Two champs i guess
>>
>>74142770
who else are you expecting him to beat at 160?

canelo vacated the belt, what is golovkin supposed to do?

literally is not his fault
>>
>>74142737

After the first fight because he's trying to extort more money out of them and doesn't give a shit about contracts. It didn't do well on PPV only did 160,000 I think

>>74142739

Ward won't fight him at 164 now, if anything he'd do what Froch did and say make it 172 lbs catch weight. Golovkin will beat Canelo and BJS but he isn't a big middleweight, against bigger fighters he'll have a harder time
>>
>>74142855
I expect him to beat jacobs then move up to 168 since everyone else is ducking. You can only beat who's in front of you but you can only turn around to face the one behind you.
>>
>>74142893
OK that was very bad
>>
>>74142893
so how can you say he hasn't dominated 160?

that statement is just false
and desu I don't really see anyone at 168 giving him problems

don't see ward coming down from 175 and don't see anyone else in the division being able to stop him, best they can hope for is stopping his KO streak
>>
>>74142918
He hasn't fought Saunders, canelo, jacobs, pirog (excused). Hypothetically I think he'd beat them all, but this isn't a boxrec fantasy match up thread. Hes unproven
>>
>>74142918
>and desu I don't really see anyone at 168 giving him problems
from what I've seen from Ramirez he could give GGG trouble.
>>
>>74142961

Golovkin would look like a midget next to Ramirez and Callum Smith. Doesn't mean he wouldn't win but he does have flaws that will be more exposed against bigger men (head movement isn't good)
>>
>>74143003
I'd favour him against Smith but not Ramirez
>>
>>74143003
I think bigger fighters and their bigger punches will force him to use his defense more. I also think golovkin is better at moving his head against taller guys(tho that's kinda true for every fighter)
>>
>>74143022

Smith is young and untested, really interested to see how he does against Anthony Dirrell.
>>
>>74143003
bigger fighter, bigger body shots

the simple fact is that at 168 no one there can soak up his power and survive, so you need someone who can either outbox him or move in a way that he won't be able to land

I really like smith and ramirez but I just don't see them lasting
>>
>>74143074

It's conjecture at this point. Whenever bigger opponents have been talked about (Froch, Ward) he's asked for a catchweight. That suggests that he knows it will be harder. I think he'll be happy to beat Saunders to unify, get his money against Canelo then do one catchweight fight at 166 against someone who will suit him like DeGale then retire.
>>
>>74143189
not really sure why the bigger guy would shy away from a catchweight though
>>
>>74143074
>I really like smith and ramirez but I just don't see them lasting
Ramirez is very rangy and technical while Golovkin is pretty flat-footed with poor head movement. lighting him up from a distance with combination punching and strongarming him when he gets in distance would be a cakewalk for Ramirez.
>>
>>74143253
>cakewalk

lets be realistic

before lemieux people were saying because golvokins head movement is shit he would get dropped, yet he adjusted his approach, utilised his jab and outworked him

golovkins boxing smarts and skill are often overshadowed by his power but they are there
>>
>>74143296
>people were saying
who was saying? all I remember of people talking about Lemieux was that others were unrealistically hyping him up and that he'd been stopped by lesser punchers than Golovkin.
>>
>>74143237

It's not to their advantage to deplete further if they're 6ft plus. Golovkin has only recently got any star power, calling Froch out after retirement because he wants that Wembley money and then asking for 165 catchweight when he's obviously not going to come down below the super middle limit
>>
>>74143074
>>74142961
I am not convinced by Ramirez just yet. Him vs Korobov would be a good fight to see how Ramirez fares, even though Korobov is the definition of liability.

I don't know if GGG really wants to move up though. If he does then imo he should have taken the hint in February 2014 when Martinez decided to fight Cotto.
>>
>>74143445

http://www.boxingscene.com/sanchez-golovkin-aims-unify-break-hopkins-defense-record--110574

Sanchez says that he wants to go for 21 title defenses. He is currently at 17, if he beat Jacobs it will be 18, also the winner of that fight will most likely have to fight the IBF mandatory
unless they secure a unification (WBO). After that Golovkin will could face Canelo and if he beats him will only need one more fight to break the record.

Are Duco events seriously underestimating Hughie Fury? They won the purse bid and now they're considering doing the fight in Manchester anyway because it will build Parker for bigger money fights against Joshua and Haye. I think it's mad to consider going outside New Zealand when they don't have to, Hughie is big, tall and will work the jab. He's an awkward opponent they don't want to be giving more encouragement to. Maybe they think he'll knock him out like Alexander Dimitrenko.

Boxing is like cycling, most have cheated at some point because there's too much money at stake. Joshua has good genetics, is disciplined about diet and training and is clean enough to pass drug tests. Has he ever run a cycle? Very likely but he wouldn't get away with constantly running anabolic steroids

just look into how these drug tests work, it's very easy to cheat drug tests when so much is at stake, it's not like I have anyhting against roids though, I just wish they were allowed so people would be honest about it.
>>
>>74147978

Growth hormone is harder to detect but not sure how much that would help for endurance vs steroids or the red blood cell trick they use in cycling. It would be good if there was 1 boxing organisation that said we won't test for anything
>>
>>74147994
hgh just makes you grow faster, the thing is, it also grows your organs, this means it grows the stomach and your bellly protrudes out, you wind up looking like you have a beer gut with shreded abs on top.

It doesn't help with endurance but joshua put on like 50 pounds of muscle since his olympic days, that's a ton considering he was already near genetic peak (maybe even above it) back then.

Don't take this like hating on joshua, I just think people should know that most top athletes in an y sport use drugs.
>>
>>74148014

That's a disadvantage though in boxing because you have to do a lot of cardio and carrying more weight will take its toll. He gassed a bit against Whyte then paced himself better against Breazeale. Look at Frank Bruno, used to look like a bodybuilder but muscle isn't everything.
>>
>>74148031
Exactly you are absolutely right, I don't think he needs to be this big, but to be this big you need drugs, that's the only thing I'm arguing for here.
