Kind of.
Finding loop holes and exploiting them > money > driver skill
But money was kind of needed to exploit loop holes

However for drivers
skill > money

So, why is F1 considered the premier racing series then? There must be other racing series that have stricter or more "fair" regulations correct?

Not trying to shit on it, just trying to understand.

These drivers are the best in the world and are paid millions of dollars, of course they are all confident and, to a certain degree, arrogant. Most of them aren't that bad though, there's probably only 3-4 drivers in the field for this year who are insufferable at times.

This question has bothered me for almost eight years.

Had Red Bull won the driver's and constructor's championships in 2009 instead of Brawn GP, would Brawn GP still be around today, or at the very least lasted beyond 2009, or were they destined to be bought out by Mercedes no matter what, even if they didn't win it all that year?

pretty sure majority of the "big" posters go on reddit.

Nicknames give people ideas of grandeur and reddit lets them get famous posting with a user name.

>>
I intend to see to it that any man who posts on reddit or wears a tripcode name gets what he deserves: A short drop and sudden stop.
>>
>>74108411

Going on reddit is one thing, but why would anyone actually post there? If you just use reddit as a "link aggregator" for a specific topic then I think it is fine, and I pretty much use it like this to check what is going on with F1 when at work or something and have a few minutes off. Posting there is really just cringey though and the whole "community" of the F1 subreddit is so fucking annoying that I don't even know how you can really enjoy it. It's all shitty inside jokes and the actual good comments are so rare that it's not worth digging through the memes and le kimiquokka autism to read them.

The whole reason I come to 4chan at all is because of the anonymity, I don't need a personality, I don't need to worry about my "reputation" online, I don't need to reveal my actual identity and the posts here on /f1/ are basically all taken at face value from more or less the same starting point except for the Greek flag, because we know who that poster always is (is he dead yet btw?)

>still more than 2 full weeks before anything interesting will happen regarding F1
>testing itself will also be just an eternal quest to try and guess who is actually sandbagging and who is actually good and whatnot

painful offseason tbhlads

Remember when Ferrari was really impressive in the 2016 pre-season tests and everyone thought they had a Merc killer? Then they got a 1-2 lead in Australia and everyone thought everything would be solve, and then the rest of the season happened. Ferrari has so much fucking money I really don't understand how they aren't effortlessly producing race winning cars at the very minimum every single season. I mean I know why it is, but its just astounding that it continues to be so, and probably will continue to get worse.

Arrivabenis "fired"/"stepping down"/"found dead in hotel room in Maranello" by midseason likely, by Monza 100% confirmed

>>74108456

The hivemind is prevalent on both sites and both sites just tend to attract specific types of people. I would argue that the hivemind at reddit is much more pronounced and intense because of the voting system. If you say something that goes against the hivemind on 4chan, you'll be ignored or called a retard, if you say something against the hivemind on reddit, chances are other people won't even see your post as downvoted posts are automaticaly hidden and moved to the bottom of the page, unless you specifically set it up to show them (sort by controversial)

>2015 Melbourne - oh ok nothing has changed
>2016 Melbourne - m-maybe Ferrari are a real contend-- oh ok Merc was fucking around the whole pre-season and are still just as dominant as before

I don't know what I will do if 2017 is more of the same. I mean I should be happy because it gives Bottas a chance to win races, but who wants to watch a driver win races in a car that absolutely cannot be beaten? If Bottas wins a bunch of races in a dominant machine it will be cool I guess, but it doesn't mean anything, it just means he is in the Merc and it can't be beaten by anyone except the other guy in the same car.

Fuck if we even get 2 teams battling for the WDC/WCC I will be ecstatic. But it's just likely going to be MWL with a low chance of RBWL
>>
>>74108719

Anyone have any good sites where you can check air pressure and density? The laptimes are practically worthless if we don't have access to information about the surrounding environment.

We're going to need air humidity and accurate wind readings from multiple stations around the track at the VERY LEAST, otherwise its just a total throwaway session in terms of actual performance analysis.

>Ricciardo
>winning another race ever again

jk but seriously

I do think there is something with Ricciardo that is a bit strange. I think his driving style might just be extremely suitable for the 2014 onwards v6 hybrid cars. I don't remember everything about his career but was he really that impressive before RB? Did he really do anything noteworthy in TR or in his junior career? I don't really know what it is but his performance seemed to come out of nowhere. I guess we will see in 2017

As much as I don't want Max to become a WDC, at least not before he's like 25, I have a very strong objective feeling that if Ricciardo and Verstappen were to go head to head for the title, Max would win. Drivers actually improve and get noticeably better even around 26-28, and sometimes even into the 30s they develop their driving to new levels. This is what kind of "worries" me about Max, like he is already pretty quick and knows how to handle a car, but what if he actually learns pure Schumi-tier consistency autism and removes the mistakes from his driving? Max is 19, he has a decade until he is of the age where drivers generally reach their utmost peak. Vettel isn't an old driver yet he is a decade older than Max.

AMX is likely to do better, providing he doesn't fuck up. You have to consider that while he's compared to Senna or Schumi, he is Jos's son and seems to have the same temper.

RBR don't seem to care all that much when drivers step out of line (Vettel specifically), but if AMX gets all tanty, it could affect his relationship with the team.

>Verstappen > Ocon

Ocon has the talent of Verstappen, without the overconfidence.

It'll fuck Max just like like fucked his daddy.
>>
>>74110572
Ricky is a solid driver that is capable of some great races. If it wasn't for >Red Bull strategy he would have won more races this year. His comfortable 3rd place in MWL era backs this up.

Amx is still kind of an unknown quantity. We know he can pull out some great races when he has nothing to lose. But this previous season there was no way he could have taken 3rd in the WDC and he had a lot to prove of himself as a driver. We don't know how he will race when there is something on the line. We also know he can make stupid mistakes that take him out of the running for a podium in some races. But would he make those same mistakes when there is something "real" to lose like his position in the WDC?

This makes speculation on who will do better kind of stupid.
>>
>>74110988

This quite likely

>>74110894

Why do people think this? Ocon is good, yes, but I'm assuming this comes from their time together in F3? Ocon won in a Prema, that series is literally Premawinslol. Sure it is impressive to win in your debut season but when you're driving a Prema it's not exactly the most amazing thing ever.

Verstappen won a bunch of races and placed third in his first year of cars against a much more experienced field in a LITERALLY WHO tier team that no one had any expectations from. Sure they probably received quite a nice money injection from the Verstappens and Red Bull (although were performing well pre-RB livery etc) but still, I would consider it more impressive to win SIX races in a row with a team that had not won a single race and only scored a few podiums before 2014, than winning a championship with the car/team that is going to win the championship anyway.

People also seemingly don't realize that just about every time Ocon and Verstappen battled each other on track, Verstappen came out the winner. Ocon pretty much won that championship on consistency whilst Verstappen was a lot more all over the place.

Also you can make up your mind about the whole Mercedes vs VW engine debate but I think its pretty clear which one was the better engine.
>>
>>74111131

Other F3 Prema champions include

>Roberto Merhi
>Raffaelle Marchiello
>Daniel Juncadella
>Felix Rosenqvist
>Lance Stroll

Granted, as I said, Ocon did win in his debut season but still.

I mean he tried but things just didn't work out, wrong place, wrong time, no money.

At least he didn't end up like the other Finn prospects who just disappeared after failing at singleseaters. Glad to see him still race as he is very good at it. Maybe he should have done a Lotterer and just go to Super Formula. I also wouldn't mind seeing him try out LMP2 or LMP1

I'm surprised so many people want Ferrari to win 2bh. I fucking hate them. They are the biggest scourge on the grid, bigger than Mercedes. The reason, of course, being that Ferrari get tons of money for literally no reason other than for being Ferrari, and that's EVERYTHING that is wrong with F1.

Yeah too bad the cars won't look like that, especially the rear wings

Also McLaren are going to have a shitty electro-orange livery next year. Ron is finally gone so now they're going to go TOTALLY BONKERS and finally run an orange livery to please whatever fans they might have left

McLaren MIGHT maybe unlikely run a white and red livery in the future if Honda really really wants it for muh nippon but it won't be what the ""fans"" want because McLaren isn't fucking sponsored by Marlboro anymore and that livery was one big Marlboro ad what the fuck are people even thinking?

Some Finns have totally lost their touch with reality, they are apparently trying to get FIA grade 1 classification for Kymi Ring. Even if they get track classified so, there will never be Finnish GP, there simply isn't enough funding to make it happen, ever. Even the MotoGP will be held just once and promoter will go bankrupt.

Perez literally said "signing 1 year contract with FI is perfect for me" which basically translates to "I believe I will drive a Ferrari in 2018"

He turned down Renault for 2016 and then turned them down again for 2017, its unlikely they even want him at this point and he clearly doesn't want to be there either unless they magically unfuck their shit and become a good team within a year which they won't.

Pretty sure they are just trying for the Grade 1 license for publicity and it kind of worked as every media reported and talked about it. The promoter-owner gave a comment saying that it's unlikely that they will ever actually host a F1 race there.

Logistically it would also likely be a nightmare as its in the middle of nowhere with no real lodging possibilites close by. Unless all internationals and people not living in South Finland don't mind staying in Helsinki and traveling 100 km to the track. Which would block the roads and cause chaos.

Plus it would have to draw more than 100,000 people annually just to break even unless Liberty are planning on really shaking up things, probably even more, which would mean attracting a fuckload of people from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Russia and Central Europe, then finding accommodation and transport for all of them

aka its not happening

Wehrlein beat Sainz in a junior series once and actually did win something (other than DTM I mean) whereas Ericsson's junior record is even worse than Haryanto's.
Everything speaks for Wehrlein being better than Ericsson and that Wehrlein will beat him.
>>
>>74126799

No one is actually expecting Wehrlein not to beat Ericsson.

But if Ericsson beats or even does semi-decently against Wehrlein it will look VERY bad for someone who is fully backed by Merc.

I feel like Mercedes is forcing Wehrlein hard for whatever reason, nothing really says or shows he is that incredibly amazing to even deserve backing from a top team, let alone such adamant and consistent backing. Who knows, maybe he is utterly amazing but I just haven't seen that yet, and certainly haven't seen any consistency from him. Someone like Hamilton was amazing in everything he did before F1, came to F1 and was immediately up to speed. This is basically the benchmark rookies are compared to nowadays, which is why I don't see what the deal with an "occasionally quick" German is

Sainz also had some terrible results in his junior career and got totally annihilated by Kvyat as teammates. I don't think anyone expected him to be quite as good as he actually seems to be in F1, based on his career before F1.

Horseshit. Best car at the moment came about because Merc pre-2013 was a meme and they stopped trying to develop their car, got started on hybrid tech and then pressure the FIA into changing the regs their way. They were at least 12mths more advanced than the others.

Hamilton was tempted into the Merc by other team bosses were trying to destabilise McLaren. Stupid rotten luck he got the most dominant car in decades.

Ricciardo joined the then-defending champs just as Renault dropped the ball. Say what you will about Vettel being demotivated, but Daniel had his measure from the first race.

I think the thing that gives people the idea that Amx is better than Ricky now is because the times when Amx is at his best and not making mistakes he out qualifies and finishes ahead of Ricky.

But Amx also still has fuckups and has had plenty of races where he could do better while Ricky is consistently good.

When Amx gets consistently gud that's when Ricky might have a though time.
>>
>>74135698
>Max outqualifies Ricky
no, Max isn't a very good qualifier and we saw that when he was with Sainz as well
that's also why Villeneuve doesn't like him, VES is a good racer, a good tyre saver and good in the rain but his natural speed isn't amazing
>>
>>74134590

>>
>>74135698
This might seem (or could be just flat out delusion) biased due to my flag but I think Ricciardo has a level that he rarely ever touches and often slots in beneath it during Quali. The amount of times in qualifying he does a good first sector and then eases back to console what he's gained is something I think he does quite regularly. I think Ricciardo is a bit of a sleeper car babby when it comes to qualifying and often doesn't try to go all out unless he is completely confident that the car is good. I think the only times in 2016 where I really saw him go hard was China, Monaco, Azerbaijan, Singapore and COTA. I think in the races he trys pretty hard but I think he doesn't go as hard in Quali.

>Schumi vs Hamilton at Monza
>this fucking battle

Very interesting to watch IMO. Shame the actual live coverage is so schizophrenic, especially nowadays when every insignificant pass or insignificant celebrity in the paddock is shown and there's rarely any actual "long form" battling shown.

Also,

>implying Schumi isn't a dirty fucking driver

Had Max done some of those moves he would have been crucified. Blocking Hamilton on a DRS straight, closing the door and forcing Hamilton onto the inside grass at CURWA grande etc etc. i guess its not 100% illegal, just really dirty and somehow Schumi seems to get a free pass for it because he's Schumi? I never really understood that. Max closed the door hard on Kimi on the Kemmel straight and people were ready to kill him, Schumi did the same to Häkkinen several laps in a row (and does the same in the vid I posted) and no one cares because hehe hes the GOAT and thats racing ;))
>>
>>74136044
if Max did what he did to any driver other than Raikkonen most fans wouldn't have cared either
>>
>>74136064
If Max hadn't done it to a Ferrari or Merc driver no one would have cared
>>
>>74135749

I think Ricciardo is an exceptional qualifier. His average performance is very good and almost certainly better than Verstappen at least for now, and then he occasionally has these monster laps that come out of nowhere and it seems like he is basically going beyond what anyone really expects from the car (Spain 2016, Monaco 2016 etc). If he could unlock that peak level on a consistent basis I think he would probably be one of the best ever in the modern era.

Supposedly Red Bull also have the simulator set up to be as realistic as possible (duh) and the engineers have accurate calculations of what is the theoretical fastest a car should be able to go around a lap, like the hypothetical fastest it should be able to go. But apparently a few of their drivers can occasionally "outperform" what is expected to be the maximum of the car. Supposedly Vettel could do this, but also Ricciardo and Verstappen can. Supposedly Ricciardo was chosen over JEV basically just because he was better at the simulator. I don't know if this is actually true but I've read it from a few places at some point.

Vergne wasn't good in the Ferrari simulator as well from what I've heard. Raw speed was always something he was lacking, he sometimes was several tens slower in quali than Ric was and got outqualified by rookie Kvyat as well.
>>
>>74136064
>>74136087

I dunno. I don't know what the actual general consensus is but to me it doesn't matter who the driver is, I just think it's pretty dirty for a driver to do. Of course you can block and defend but what he's doing is waiting until the driver behind fully commits and then moves his own car in front of them (and then occasionally moves back to the racing line as well). It's dirty because in the DRS era it doesn't leave a driver any other options except for a crash or hitting the brakes. You can't just suddenly switch direction once already committed to one side and go around the other side and feed the driver in front a dummy, because the DRS is open and it will just cause you to spin out or lose traction. I mean this (Verstappen vs Maldonado) isn't an even particularly drastic block but it's Maldonado changing direction after noticing what Verstappen is doing but it almost causes him to lose it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKzx7EBz7w4

Granted its Maldonado but still.

I don't particularly agree on how its condoned and encouraged in lower categories as well, because it's eventually going to lead into some big accidents and if someone dies, F1 is cucked forever.

Putting on my SIDF hat for a moment, I don't think any of the moves (except for the Curva Grande chop, which I can't defend) were dangerous, or even illegal as per the rules defined at the time. Moving back to the racing line for the corner was a legal move at the time.

Also, it's seen as 'less bad' because Hamilton had always made a big fuss about idolizing Senna, who pioneered this exact style of defensive driving (see '85-'87 season for multiple examples, as well as Monaco '92, or Brazil '92 or Spa '93). So it's ironic to hear him whine about it.

As for Schumacher being a dirty driver, I will have to agree (due to Jerez and Monaco '06, but not this), but something people fail to remember is context -

MSC came into the sport in 1991, and spent his 'apprenticeship' in F1 under Piquet, Mansell, Senna and Prost; a group of people who, for the better part of the last decade, had been going through blood feuds, and using their cars as blocks or tools of intimidation for that time, despite having seen people die in their time in the sport. To come into the sport with that generation on top, you had to be ruthless on and off track.

The new generation of drivers has mostly come up wrapped in cottonwool, and is softer than the drivers of the 80s (and by extension, Schumi). I mean, every time something even relatively controversial happens on track, there's new regulations to ban it. Contrast this with the late 80s- early 90s, where Senna and Prost took each other out to win titles without reproach.

Max, IMO, is different, in that he's doing the same thing MSC did in '92 - target the top guys and get under their skin, both on and off track. He's doing brilliantly at it too.

The only difference is, due to his inexperience, he gets a little too impetuous at times, and makes mistakes, something Schumacher didn't do in '92-'93 (outside of France '92). So, the others have genuine cannon fodder against him.

It just says they added a third arm to the suspension that, roughly, transfers the force from one side to the other in order to improve balance and stability.
That way the car doesnt lean in the corner like in the middle pic, and stays closer to the ground improving the air flow going to the difusor and blah blah...

That's an Anti roll bar, F1 cars have had that suspension piece for decades. The bar in the middle basically takes the suspension travel from one side and uses it to force the other side down. There's nothing special about what Ferrari has in that illustration.
