the point of the ball can hit the ground and it's still a catch bc he maintained possession throughout.

This idea that if the ball ever touches a blade of grass as he's catching it = immediate incompletion is wrong
>>
>>74100426
Retardedly unnecessary reply. Everyone who watches football more than one day a year knows it's implied he means touched the ground without having possession. You can touch the ground all you want after it's considered you have control and possession of the ball.

only by technical definition of the rule. If we go by the spirit of the game where common sense is allowed then there's no way in hell that's a catch.

IMO a catch should be

>ball is thrown
>receiver touches ball with both hands
>receiver holds ball in hands for at least a second
>ball doesn't touch the ground or come out of his hands at any point
>at no point during the catch is the receiver tackled to the ground before it's secured

instead we get
>ball is thrown
>receiver gets tackled
>somehow ball flies through the air into his hands anyway
>ball bounces around playing hot potato through several players hands
>ball lands on opposing player's leg
>receiver is already down, grabs ball while laying on the ground because it happens to land directly in front of him
>hurrrr it's a catch

I mean, I'm not arguing it wasn't a catch. I'm just this clearly wasn't meant to be a catch by anyone who designed the rules of football or cares about playing within the spirit of the game. This happens in my back yard playing with friends and it's not a catch
>>
>>74100630
>they're always considered catches

No, literally the fucking opposite you leaf cunt. If the ball touches the ground simultaneous to the player landing on top of it to control it in the same motion it's ruled incomplete 99.9% of the time. I've seen it a hundred times and not once until tonight have I heard anyone try to asspull this bullshit here.

>>
>>74101025
Your opinion on what the game should be does not dictate whether it goes "against the spirit of the game". The rules were established by people who have been part of football a hell of a lot longer than you.

Does that mean some rules dont need to be changed? No. But this one in particular, nobody agrees with you. These types of catches make up for some of the most exciting and athletic catches ever, makes the game entertaining, which, unless you forgot, is the point of fucking sports.

Is this the Mandela effect or are you trying to gaslight me? I've seen it a hundred times. Player falling while trying to catch. Puts hands around ball then lands on it. His weight causes ball to shift out and touch ground even if his hand is under it. Ruled incomplete.

You'd only be correct if he were falling with the ball after having established possession as a runner.

Except that isn't what happens here. Edelman has both hands wrapped around the ball securing it for a very obvious moment while being on the ground downed by contact by Falcons players. At that instant it's a completion and the play is over.
>>
>>74102731
Can't argue with salt. I commend the effort though.

He did, though. He had the ball in his hands, the ball popped up, his knee went down, then he caught it again. What kind of logic is that?

>>
>>74102796
>Can't argue with salt.
This is a curious way of admitting that you don't know the rules of football.

>>74102860
A player's knee being down has nothing to do with whether the play is over or not if he doesn't already have possession of the ball. In theory Edelman could have laid on the ground there juggling the ball for 20 minutes and if the end result is him securing the ball in his grasp before the ball bounces on the ground, it's a completed pass just the same. The same rule applies when receivers go down to one knee to make a catch from a low pass from the quarterback and then pop back up and run for extra yardage as long as they were never touched by a defender (in the NFL anyway.)
>>
>>74100012
another classic episode of the NFL doesn't know what a catch is

was the Julio Jones catch where he outmuscled some Patriots guy early in the game that set up the TD even a catch to begin with?
>>
>>74101493

>>74102981

>>
>>74103019

>>
>>74100012
That was an amazing catch.
>>
>>74103052

He did lose control of the ball! wtf lmfao. he literally had it, then it popped out of his hands before grabbing it again.
>>
>>74103167
How many times do I need to tell you that him losing control of the ball while the ball is in midair literally doesn't matter one bit?

Like I said earlier, he could flop around on the ground for an hour juggling the ball around like a retard and the play would go on until he hauled in the ball for a catch with clear possession or he dropped the ball on the ground.
>>
>>74102731
>Edelman has both hands wrapped around the ball securing it for a very obvious moment while being on the ground downed by contact by Falcons players. At that instant it's a completion and the play is over.

That's how it would work if he were establishing possession as a runner; upright in other words. The rules for making a complete catch while falling are different and are posted directly from the nfl rule book above in this thread. He must maintain control of the ball UNTIL AFTER initial contact with the ground (i.e. it cant touch the ground) it even EXPLICITLY states this and at least in my fucking time line it is ALWAYS ruled this way. There is no "but he grabbed it before he landed on the ground so it doesn't matter" clause when dealing with establishing possession WHILE FALLING.

now you understand

you'll never look at a meme catch the same again
>>
>>74103534
>it cant touch the ground
It didn't touch the ground and he maintained control, so it's a catch. It states right in the rule posted above that the ruling of a completion or incompletion is independent of whether or not the player loses control of the ball or how many time he loses control of the ball in the act of falling, so long as he establishes possession of the ball before the ball hits the ground.

The rules for making a catch while falling are actually more lenient than making a catch as a runner (must make a football move) and if you understood the rule you would realize this. I have no idea what you are angling for by trying to point out that he wasn't a runner.
>>
>>74102958

the edelgod catch was glorious but it was brady's tactical and strategic command of the relays in the 4th quarter that won the game

edelgod's moves gave that chance to brady but without brady i doubt any other player in the nfl coulda won it
>>
>>74103671
Nope, the player. Read the rule it's posted. it says HIS initial contact with the ground, not ITS initial contact with the ground.
>>

>>
>>74103167
watch the replay -- it didn't pop -- it looks as if edelman refloated it deliberately to get the right attitude on the ball so it could grip it square before he would let it touch down
>>
>>74103737

Please stop trying to act smart when you clearly lack basic reading comprehension. The ball never touched the ground so it was a catch. The sad part is that once you realize that you're wrong you'll probably start claiming "lulz was just trollin."
>>
>>74103737
God you're fucking dense. That rule is describing a situation in which a player that is falling in the act of making the catch has control of the ball in midair and then loses it (or holds onto it) upon slamming into the ground while completing the catch. It only tangentially even applies to this Edelman catch.

But was he down? Looks like his lower body was ontop of other players. Looks like he was not down until his arms hit the ground.

Guess the officials are payed well do to their job and do it better than armchair referees.

You are so mad that you've gone blind.

>>
>>74104510
this. TV showed images of the giants superbowl´s winner touchdown against pats to understand how to rule edelmans play. Edelman is on top of several falcon players and maintains control of football before he touches ground. It was a catch.
>>
Hey guys I just woke up. Was it a good game? Headlines say the Patriots came back from a record deficit. Was it a historic night then?
>>
>>74100012
Here's another (You) ya big baby.
>>
>>74100338
They're the same nigga, dumbass.
>>
>>74104823
yes

tom brady is literally the undisputed GOAT now

whites won
>>
>>74102595
Except you can juggle the ball all you want as long as you had control before your first contact with the ground (which he did). Fag.
>>
>>74104793
That has nothing to do with it

He doesn't have to have control of the football before he touches the ground.
>>
>>74103839

That's exactly what I am counting on, too.

I love that the Patriots now have their own version of the helmet catch to trigger a fanbase with. Welker was great but my god is Edelman so much better in the playoffs
>>
>>74100205
You would be saying the same thing if Atlanta won with Julio Jones's catch.
>>
>>74102463
>It's retarded that a receiver is allowed to get control after his fucking knee is down.
Are you clinically fucking retarded
Did you seriously type that out and think that it made any sense whatsoever

Thank god you people don't make rules in this league
>>
>>74100580
This is what you're resorting to? "It wasn't fair, the Pats didn't win the game in spirit!" I'll take an actual victory over a spirit victory any day.
>>
>>74100012
It was a catch, nigget
>>
>>74104823
it was the most exciting grand final of high impact armoured egg toss in world history

unfortunately some people seem to think that this means the Nazis win or something

What dont you niggers understand about this?
>>
>>74103836
This. Immediately after it touches the ground both his hands come of the ball and he regrabs it, meaning he didn't have possession

It's a pretty clear cut catch
>>
>>74107108
That was a player's leg, not the ground. At no point does the ball touch the ground until it is in Edelman's grasp.
