Starting to get my head around training more than one tactic. I haven't been able to figure out enough about tactic-making to make my own, guides are mostly useless and just make it seem overly complex. I just plucked a tactic off fm base that seemed to fit the roles my players were familiar with.

What Im wondering is do you guys normally run two or more tactics that use players in mostly the same roles, just with different instructions? Or do you get players that can do multiple roles or just have players that you can use in only one tactic? Im not sure what the most efficient way is.

My approach is always the following when I start playing a new FM iteration:

First, I pick the most sensible formation given the squad that my team has, with as few starting instructions as possible. At the beginning, I only have one formation - this makes learning the formation much faster (and maxing out my main tactics is very important to me). I try to make these tactics work, based on what I'm seeing in the 2D matches.

I only do minor changes in the first half of the season, like moderately alter width or back line, and I try out different roles to see what I like in which positions. After the first half of the season is over, I try to improve what I have or completely revamp it if it has been a shitshow or if I realized that the match engine favors certain things (wingbacks in FM15, crosses in FM16, etc). For that, I try to use all the analysis tools that the game offers (I try to find patterns and systematic weaknesses etc and try to adress them).

And once I max out this improved version of my tactics, I do two other tactics. One is usually a good park the bus tactic against teams that will BTFO me otherwise, and the other is either a tactical variety that my squad allows me to play, or just a more aggressive/attacking version of my main tactic for when I'm chasing goals.


tl;dr: only do one main tactic until you optimise it and max it out, after that just do two tactics for outlier opponents (since your main tactic should be balanced for your general team level)

I have a pretty good understanding of what each role does, but I'm unsure of how those roles should work together or how instructions and structures should work with those roles, or how to choose a formation. I tried googling some guides, but they mostly explain WHAT everything is without discussing how they should all work together.
