Been coaching competitive soccer for 10 years. Have my licences, etc.

Not at the 16/17 age group yet, but I find my 15 year old girls respond to MY energy and intensity level more than anything else. If I'm low energy, they are. If I show up ready and excited to play, they are too.

Also, the intensity of your session directly corresponds to the intensity of the match. So if you let them be lazy and lack intensity in practice, they will generally be like that in a game.

Higher intensity warm ups help to. Sets the tone for the game.

I have a D license. Generally I just focus on skills and teach good fitness and diet and a little bit about tactics, but haven't really ever had motivation problems. Most kids that age I've come across are highly motivated if they've made the team.

I dunno about football but at 16/17 playing Rugby we were basically treated like adults, we were even allowed to drink at the club house at 16.

here are some tips
tell your team to stay in your own 16 until the other team gets out of theirs, then get the ball and counter fast
tell a kid to start yelling around and accusing the others kids dads of being friends with the ref
tell them european glory awaits them before every game
eventually slip some euros in the refs pocket and wink at him, make him an offer he can't refuse
then when you win the title take all the credit

I'd say it to them "this does not fockin' slip" every game
