at his peak he's probably one of the 10 best americans ever, at least if you are only looking at outfield players.

but he regressed very quickly, which I think is a function of 1) asking him to do too much/playing out of position 2) aging 3) moving from being an overachiever on a talented italian side to being one the more talented players in MLS, which didn't challenge him in the same way to stay sharp and improve.
