Lets not pretend the 5 year contract was ever going to be fulfiled by either West Ham or Payet. Think about it logically, they managed to sign a world class player for very cheap, being almost suspicious of that their original contract to him was pretty meh tier and had a cheap buy out (around 20mil if I remember correctly). Once they realised what they had on their hands they wanted to make sure they could sell him for more than 20 mil so they offered him whatever he wanted so that they could increase his buyout fee. West Ham profited from this. I could and have worked away from my wife in places 2 hours away on a plane and it wasn't ideal but it was fine.
