The GOAT debate is over.
>>
it was over long time ago
>>
It never was a thing. Laver is #2, by the way.
>>
There was never a debate. But after tonight the trolls have to try even harder to create bait.
>>
It wasn't a debate

He had one more day to recover. Big advantage when it's this close between competition days.
>>
>>73941052
This. Why the hell do they not have them play on the same night?
>>
>>73940911
Nope, it's still Sampras. Frauderer kept winning against literal whos until Nadal and Djokovic came around.
>>
>>73941731
Djokovic and Nadal's era is so shit that a 35 old (who isnt even GOAT apparently) could win a slam?
>>
What's the oldest anyone has competed at an elite level at?
>>
>>73940965
Isn't he from the era of amateurs?
>>
>>73941833

>>
>>73941850
he did the grand slam as an ammo and as a pro
>>
Djokovic is still better

Sampras was a GOAT all-around player. He wasn't a serve babby. And mud is a pleb surface. Back in the 90s, court differences actually meant something, unlike today. You had specialists for each court. A normal player wasn't expected to win on clay.
>>
>>73942752
>i don't like it so it's a pleb surface

If Sampras was the GOAT he would have adjusted to all surfaces. See: Andre Agassi. End of story.

Does Nadal being a lefty and Federer being a righty have any bearing on why so many of their head-to-head matches are GOAT?
>>
>>73943422
I read somewhere that it does, as in times gone by when Federer's cross court backhand was god tier like it was tonight it was played to Nadal's whipping topspin forehand.
>>
>>73943422

Sort of. It's a terrible matchup for Federer. Nadal was specifically designed, like a Frankenstein monster, to defeat Federer.

The offense vs defense gives lots of highlights.
>>
These are not the baby-faced hot shots I remember idolizing and emulating a decade ago. These are hardened, grizzled veterans. Weathered titans. The giants by which all others will be measured. Nadal's clean shaven face and long locks have given way for a gritty stubble and thinning hair. The slender, graceful Federer from yesteryear now has a face with deep lines and shadows that make hiding his age impossible (granted I suppose four children will do that to you). When he furrows his brow you can see a determination and struggle against not just his opponent, but Father Time. Despite these changes, I still feel like that same high schooler I was a decade ago. I'm still seeing the dichotomy between them that made me really love this rivalry and this sport. Masters of their craft. These are the best players of all time, and a level of dominance like this will not exist again in my lifetime. Both fierce competitors with differing styles and personalities, yet still have nothing but respect for each other. They're the antithesis of one another. Righty. Lefty. Calculated. Charismatic. Ice in his veins. Fire in his heart. Subdued. Loud. The matador. And the bull.

He is right. Djokovic does not play good tennis. He is lucky the surfaces are slow enough for him to play his defensive playstyle.

He is not a shot maker. He is a "get the ball in one more time and hope for an unforced error" player like Murray and Nadal.

That is not good tennis.

>>73949926
Federer is a fan of pretty much every sport and athletic event, so I'm not surprised
>>
>>73949863
I prefer offensive, attacking tennis as well, but I don't think you can call defensive tennis bad (maybe not entertaining, though some people love the long rallies). It's a legitimate tactic for what tennis has become. Now, would I prefer Wimbledon to play faster than it used to? Sure. All the courts play too similarly now, but that was done purposely.
>>
Question
Why do the French and British dickride Fed so much. Over the past few years it's gotten really noticeable how you prefer fed winning over your own countrymen
>>
>>73949926
Why does Ronaldo look upset?
>>
>>73949975
That should have said, would I prefer Wimbledon to play faster, like it used to.
>>
>>73949975
You can call defensive tennis bad because it relies on surface tampering more than anything.

A good attack should always outplay a good defence in most situations but theyve fucked around with the surface and the ball to such a degree that attacks are nullified once they hit the ground.

Being a dog and running to the ball for one more return is not tennis. It's short sprinting with a bit of wrist action.

Yes, defence is an important aspect of the game but when players are able to make it the SOLE aspect of their playing style and still win slams, you know there is something very wrong with the sport.
>>
>>73950002

>>73949975
Tennis is that way because Federer will fucking eat every non-defensive player alive as he has done for 15 years now.

Tennis today is a result of Federer dominance and the game changing to beat him.
>>
Which do you guys think is the most physically demanding Grand Slam tournament?

IMHO it's RG
>>
>>73950115
Well said kraut.

And when you say "the game changing to beat him" I hope you literally mean it because they literally slowed the surface down to fuck with his streak and make it interesting again for casuals.
>>
>>73950123
Wimbledon has seen some brutal 5 setters
>>
>>73950077
>You can call defensive tennis bad because it relies on surface tampering more than anything.
Well, yeah, but that's just the players taking advantage of the slower court speed and new rackets/strings I don't blame them for a style of play that works, I blame the tournament directors and whoever else was involved with the decision to screw with the court surfaces.
>>
>>73950123
RG is the most physically exhausting because it isn't tennis. It's Olympic short sprinting with a bit of pong thrown in.

Wimbledon requires the best tennis skill. US Open is a slight variation on it.
>>
>>73950151
It's pretty quick though.
>>
>>73950149
Yes, that (and other things) is what I meant.
>>
>>73950166
>I blame the tournament directors and whoever else was involved with the decision to screw with the court surfaces.

Yes, I don't blame the players either. I'm merely recognizing that they arent great players.

The directors are money hungry fucks and money poisons all sports unfortunately
>>
>this aussie troll

Why?
>>
>>73950115
>tennis could be divided as BF. and AF.
>>
>>73950179
Yea but that doesn't mean it's not physically demanding

Faster court means faster sprints required

It's probably more tiring than RG but RG is more destructive to your joints
>>
>>73950231
It's true just ask Roddick

He was basically the last of that generation, and he (and others) got eviscerated by Roger's precise, perfect shots when they tried to play aggressively
>>
>>73950115
Well, Wimbledon had actually started to slow up when Fed won his first title there. Actually, he even said his ability to play more from the baseline because of the more consistent grass helped him, instead of feeling like he had to serve and volley so much. But it's become ridiculously slow over the last five years. The Aussie Open resurfaced their courts too during his prime. It seems more receptive to spin, which actually helps Fed a bit on his own serve, but it has more kick which allows balls to get up higher on him.
>>
>>73950077

Based Australia, checked.
>>
>>73950237
It's a different kind of tear I guess, Wimbly you need to crouch more and that takes a toll.
>>
>>73950266
Yea Wimbledon is pathetic, I feel like even this years Aussie was quicker than it. I hope they change that to give Roger a 19th slam.
>>
>>73950266
>Wimbledon had actually started to slow up when Fed won his first title there.
Wrong, Wimbledon changed to ryegrass in 2002, look it up.
>>
>>73950237
Points usually end faster on grass though, even if Wimbledon is slower than in the past. Players have to just let balls go that they'd normally try to track down on clay.
>>
>>73950123

Biggest challenges at each:
>Australian Open
The heat. The sun. But, all the players are fresh for it since it's at the very start.

>Roland Garros
Obviously the clay court tennis and sometimes rainy conditions.

>Wimbledon
Obviously the grass. Different bounces, different speeds.

>US Open
Heat (sometimes), wind, and the fact that it's the last slam and at the end of the summer season means that most players are exhausted and/or carrying injury.

Overall I would say USO just because it's at the end of a grueling summer.
>>
Why doesn't /sp/ rate djoko? Genuine question.
>>
>>73950332
Because he is the new breed of tennis player that the directors want to see.

He is the new breed that relies on athleticism > skill and plays like a dog fetching a ball. Same with Murray.
>>
>>73950332

Nobody cares about that boring, robotic, asshole clown.
>>

This

Murray's game is the most pathetic anonymous shit I've ever seen

How that fuck ever won slams is beyond me
>>
>>73950376
His height gives him all the advantages he needs in this new era of slow tennis
>>
>>73950300
Yes, the new grass doesn't cause as many bad bounces as in the past. Part of the reason players served and volleyed was because there were so many horrible bounces. The rye plays like a hard court a lot of the time, though there's still the occasional bad bounce.

There was a change besides the grass, though. Players swear the balls are different, slower, even though I believe the club denies it.
>>
>>73950376
>>73950402

>>
>>73950450
It would be amazing but sponsors probably want more tv time or theyre messing with win streaks to get casuals interested in tennis again

Peak Nadal schools Peak Federer.
>>
Anyone else noticed how well Federer was returning today? Granted, Nadal doesn't have the bggest serve on tour, but every ball was going back to his feet, very deep.
>>
>>73950668
Especially on his backhand. I haven't seen his backhand look that good in a long time.
>>
>>73950639
Peak Federer never had a backhand this good so it's a moot point. Federer didn't really have a peak. He was and is GOAT since 2003.

If you want to argue it though, then Federer schools Nadal on every surface but clay. Fact.
>>
>Nadal hasn't beaten Federer in 3 years
And people think he's as good?
>>
>>73950668
>>73950798
His backhand never ever was this good before. I have no clue how he did it but this backhand fucking destroyed Nadal today. I've never seen Federer win a slam through his backhand. His forehand declined though. Could just be his leg problem though.

You're right, he was definitely more aggressive than normal with it, not just hitting stop spin instead of slicing, but taking it early. In the past he'd start to get aggressive with it, then revert to slicing or standing back.

My point is they were roughly similar, Federer reached 11 still aged 25. If he had retired then his strike rate and winning percentages would look a lot more impressive, which is the reason most people seem to claim Borg as GOAT tier. Sustained winning and dominance is part of what makes up a GOAT, something Borg never gave himself a chance at.

- most weeks ranked top 4
- most weeks ranked top 5

hopeful bordering on overly optimistic :
- outright leader in most wimbledons

- most matches won (all tournaments)
- most masters finals
- oldest world #1
- most year end #1 rankings

>>
>>73960197
well first of all, irrelevant it's still cheating regardless. secondly wawrinka was in tears of pain and had to noticeable change his gameplan to restrict his movement as much as possible, i am willing to give him he benefit of the doubt. im not willing to give it to federer after he did it two matches in a row after losing the 4th set and continued to have perfect movement both before and after the MTO's. thirdly federer's vague, scrambling and embarrassed answer when asked by the interviewer after the semi confirmed he didn't have an injury

federer cheated. simple as that. almost every player has done it at least once. why are his fanbase so desperate to maintain his >le classy guy image?

>>

don't think we ever mentioned
>le class
once but Federer mentioned about pain in the quadriceps region after the Wawrinka match.

>all injury is supposed to impair your movement
well, the thing that could affect his movement the most, which was his back, didn't get fucked up. Nadal in 2014 AO final had a fucked back as well, after he took the MTO he started the 3rd set very slowly, but as the meds kicked in his game began to pick up.

>>73960274
Nadal took an MTO during first set of 2011 RG final, when Federer was leading 5-2.
>>
A side note about MTO and calling the trainer. At the Hobart tournament in the run up to the AO, in a first round match, both women tried to retire at the same time after playing 1 game so that they could take part in AO qualifying instead of the tournament they were in
>>
Also: if it's in the rulebook, then it's legal, and if it's legal, then it's not cheating. "le legalised cheating" is literally mental gymnastic that Pat Cash memed up because no one listened to his rambling.

Not only is it within the rules, Federer also had an MTO to receive treatment for the same injury during his match with Wawrinka who also took an MTO after he went 2 sets down which you could say disrupted a dominant rhythm of Federer too. Players are also allowed 2 bathroom breaks, so if Federer had taken a 10 minute shit are you going to say he's cheating as well for leaving the court.

>Wawrinka was in tears of pain and had to noticeable change his gameplan
Anecdotal dick sucking you know nothing of what Wawrinka was going through.

>>73960269
>did i, or anyone, ever say these occurrences weren't cheating?
So you are equating Stan or anyone who takes their allowed MTO under the allowed RULES as a cheat? Ok.

Cheating (verb)
1. act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage

it's cheating. why can you not just admit Federer cheated? thousands of players do it.

>>73960314
> Wawrinka who also took an MTO after he went 2 sets down which you could say disrupted a dominant rhythm of Federer too. Players are also allowed 2 bathroom breaks, so if Federer had taken a 10 minute shit are you going to say he's cheating as well for leaving the court.

yes I would say that. lots of players do it, Raonic for example.

there's enough anecdotal evidence to give wawrinka the benefit of the doubt. there isn't any whatsoever for Federer. but yes, both were as bad as each other in my eyes.

>So you are equating Stan or anyone who takes their allowed MTO under the allowed RULES as a cheat? Ok.

i am equating anyone who takes an MTO or extended breaks in order to attempt to affect an opponent a cheat yes. Nadal has been a proven cheat for years. Djokovic has done it in finals against Murray. Now you can add Federer to the proven cheat list too, and probabky Wawrinka too.

What is a "title" in tennis? I don't understand, I thought there were only grand slams but Federer has 89 titles? What does that mean?

God dammit you moron

Grand Slams are "special" titles but in essence they're just tournaments like all the others, they're just far more prestigious and award more points and cash and nowadays, they're all that people count to keep score. There's only 4 of them a year but there's many other tournaments on the tour. That's why it's called the world tour. It goes around the world for the whole year.

So yes a player will have many more titles than he holds grand slams.
>>
>>73962990
There are many tournaments throught the year. Winning one of them is a "winning a title". Federer has won 89 of them already.
Four out of those many tournaments in a year are "Grand Slams". They are by far the most important tournaments in tennis and winning one requires more effort because there are more rounds to get to the title and also the matches do last longer; in a normal tournament you need to win 2 sets to win a match, in a Grand Slam you need 3 sets.
Federer has won 89 titles in total (including several "smaller" tournaments) and 18 Grand Slam titles. The 18 is seen everywhere because - as stated above - they are by far the most important tournament victories.
I hope this clears things up for you.

>>
>>73963927
Spoken like a true casual.

>>
>>73963943
Greatness is judged on majors. Can you quote me the career wins of Borg, Federer, Nadal, Sampras, etc? Of course not, unless you're autistic, but you probably know how many major titles they have.
>>
>>73963858

Borg, Nadal, Wilander, Lendl.

Djokovic and Villas have 4. Both better clay courters than Federer.
>>
>>73963887
By the way, since you didn't know the answer, I'll give it to you. Three. Nadal, Borg, and Federer, with Djokovic perhaps having a chance. If not for the greatest clay court player of all time, Federer would be second to only Borg in French Open titles.
>>
>>73963927
Oh and in answer to your question - Lendl, Borg, Nadal, Wilander have all better clay court players than Federer. As too Kuerten, Muster, Bruguera, Vilas.

I'd even go as far to say Djoko is better on clay than Federer is.

WRONG.

>>
>>73964035
This argument is the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears because you cannot tolerate what is being said.

How can you, using your own argument, claim Federer is a top 5 clay court player when there's at least seven (off the top of my head) players that have won more FO titles than Federer?
>>
>>73964035
Why do you expect anyone to take casuals like you seriously when you can't even get basic facts right?

5 players have reached 5 French Open finals in the Open Era. Not 3 like you erroneously tried to claim.

The information is right there to everyone on the internet. Utter thicko.

Get out of this thread right now, clown.
>>
>>73964065
>How can you, using your own argument, claim Federer is a top 5 clay court player when there's at least seven (off the top of my head) players that have won more FO titles than Federer?
Because Borg or Nadal would have brutalized anyone on your list. Lendl played Borg once at the French, and lost. Wilander never had to. If Borg doesn't retire they may never win the French. Lendl even lost a final to freaking Yannick Noah.
>>
>>73964106
>if my uncle had a fanny he'd be my aunt

Let's be fucking clear here. Federer has had 17 opportunities to win the French Open and has only managed one, and only did so because Nadal's knee was fucked from a match between them a few weeks prior in Monte Carlo(?).

Federer is not in anyway a top 5 clay court player.
>>
>>73964153
Yet he's 3rd all-time in French Finals appearances, and it only took the greatest clay court player in history beating him four of those times. Meanwhile Lendl lost to a guy winning his lone career major.
>>
Even if you take your utterly retarded argument that only French Open's count

Djokovic, Wilander, Borg, Nadal, Lendl, Jan Kodes, Kuerten and Jim Courier all have more FO titles(well Djokovic doesn't yet), and a better overall win%.

Even by your utterly retarded parameters he isn't a top 5 clay player.
>>
>>73964202
And yet again, how many of those guys regularly played Borg or Nadal at the French?
>>
>>73964188
>i will desperately try to undermine a player who won three fo titles and eight majors because he lost one time to noah

Shall we point out that at his peak, Federer lost the 2009 US Open to Del Potro despite the title being pretty much in his grasp?
>>
>>73964222
>o-o-only majors count
okay, then Federer isn't even top 7

>o-o-only majors against borg and nadal count

Pathetic. Why hasn't Fed been to an FO final since 2011? Why didn't he win 2015 or 2016 if Nadal is the only thing stopping him?
>>
>>73964238
And Del Po would have been a freak if his wrist didn't shatter shortly after that win. Anyone that watched him knows that, and you accuse me of not being a tennis fan. Noah was a good player, nothing more.

By the way. Lendl never lost a French Open final to Yannick Noah. It was Mats Wilander.

Sure thing cutie, Borg and Nadal aren't good on clay, and it wasn't an advantage at all to players like Courier, Lendl, Wilander, and Kuerten that they avoided having to play them.
>>
>>73964447
But you have.

Arguing that Fed would have more titles on clay if not for Nadal is a retarded as saying Nadal would have more majors if not for his knee.

Irrelevant, Fed isn't a top 5 clay court player.
>>
>>73964447
If you want to discount RG's won outwith the Nadal and Borg era, then we can also discount other slams win by players in the early-mid 2000s before Nadal and Djokovic, right? Fits your logic.
>>
>>73964502
I'm arguing Federer would have more titles if not for the greatest clay court player of all time. I'm arguing Wilander and Lendl would be lucky to have more than 1 French title a piece if they played Borg, or that Courier and Kuerten would have none if they played Nadal.

As for Nadal, he'd have more majors if he didn't have to destroy his body with his playing style, but that's what he's gotta do to win.

Oh, so you've now changed it to "more than" after you got torn to bits earlier on when you displayed a complete ignorance regarding tennis?

Your claim was that Nadal was the one preventing Federer from winning more FO titles, yet they have only met on five occasions in the 17 times Roger has played at RG.

Why don't you try and argue your point about Federer rather than strawmanning about others?

Why don't you tell us why he's a top 5 clay court player without mentioning Nadal, Lendl, Wilander or anyone else?
>>
>>73966915
>Oh, so you've now changed it to "more than" after you got torn to bits earlier on when you displayed a complete ignorance regarding tennis?
So you just now learned to read? Cool.

>Your claim was that Nadal was the one preventing Federer from winning more FO titles, yet they have only met on five occasions in the 17 times Roger has played at RG.
And Wilander and Lendl only went to five finals in seven years, so what's their excuse? Roger's window at the French closed five years ago. The only guy that's had more than a seven year run of greatness at the French is Nadal, since Borg retired abruptly.

>Why don't you tell us why he's a top 5 clay court player without mentioning Nadal, Lendl, Wilander or anyone else?
He's a top 5 clay courter because he'd have 5 French Open titles if he wasn't stuck in his prime going against the GOAT clay courter. Imagine Nadal isn't around and Feds has his five French titles. Would your opinion of his clay court skills be different? Did Wilander or Lendl have to compete against one of the two all-time greats on clay? Nope. Don't you think that matters? It's Borg, Nadal............power gap.....everyone else. Anyone stuck against them got a raw deal, same with anyone that got stuck facing Sampras at Wimbledon in his prime...except for some guy that disrupted his epic run.
>>
>>73967028
Yes, you should try doing a bit of reading yourself, particularly on the history of the French Open

>And Wilander and Lendl
What part of "strawmanning about others" did you not understand, fatty?

>he'd have 5 French Open titles if he wasn't...
Lets deal with facts. He doesn't have 5 FO titles he has ONE, and there's no guarantee he would have more without Nadal around. Ub fact he's had many opportunities to do so and failed.

Lendl and Wilander had each other to contend with, both are extremely gifted clay court players, arguably two of the top 5 ever, which Federer is not and claiming that he is simply because he had Nadal to contend with is not an argument.
