I have the opposite issue, I don't know how to talk or pay attention to someone in a wheel chair, I get nervous and freak out, but more so it only happens with strangers and not people I know.

I'm not an asshole, I just don't have young friends who have been paralyzed...

i'd say we're used to this. i can't speak for all wheelchair users but i usually cut people some slack about it.
