I didn't HAVE to verify through DNA testing. We just didn't know the exact ratio of white to black, and my mom took a DNA test through Ancestry, because she was curious.
Yeah, I'd say that my white passing experience gave me a pretty non-POC experience. I mean, the older I got, people would ask me if I was mixed with anything else, and they'd ask to touch my hair and stuff, but that was the exception; most people just assumed I was white. I'm just curious as to whether or not people assume that I'm mixed when they look at me, because I have literally no clue. Do I just look racially ambiguous, or what?

I'm Ethiopian by blood, from immigrant parents. They never really experienced racism growing up, Ethiopia is pretty homogenous. A lot of the discrimination they've experienced is due to being seen as foreign/ethnic, not black. They don't really see themselves as black.

On the other hand, I grew up in the U.S. I haven't been the victim of any sort of violence, or hatred, but I've definitely experienced prejudice, and ignorance. From white people, and from black people. I don't have many black friends, because I didn't grow up around many non-ethiopian black people. Still, it would be stupid of me to not acknowledge that living in liberal areas, and being privileged enough to come from and educated and financially secure family, affects how I'm percieved. I've had people be surprised that I don't 'talk ghetto', surprised that I sound and dress and look the way I do. White people see me as 'one of the good ones' and black people see me as 'not really black'. But i can acknowledge that I haven't experienced the worst of the racism that this country has to offer, without denying that it ever happens. I can empathize with people, even if their experiences are different from mine.
