How do I stop myself from giving in to my vanity and fishing

Just wanted to say that I know this feel anon. Try finding something to do that doesn't make you think about yourself. Focus your thoughts elsewhere. Getting quick feedback and attention is tempting but try to take a break from /soc/ and maybe even mirrors or your phone camera for a while (if that's an issue for you) and really commit to something outside of yourself.

You choose this venue because its isolated. you can express your true concerns (which challenges the toxic male gaze we've all been socialized with).. I don't know what the culture is like in your area, but we all know what its like to have to fit in, even through self depreciation. Ive been lucky having an athletic build but a non impressionable personality.
But the truth is that alpha male image is all BS. Im not saying there aren't values associated with masculinity that are positive, such as loyalty, honor, courage. But these have been over exaggerated by social & peer impressions.
Most don't recognize the social structure around them, But you obviously do, that shows your ability to supersede the tribal male archetype... I don't know your age or really anything. But you have the resources to grow without a entourage of people who are tasked with nothing more than ego reinforcement.
We all decide our own level of involvement. But not everyone can see the subtle nuances that make a big difference. I believe you're on the right track. Just keep thinking critically, asking questions, Also don't be afraid to exert yourself or opinions. People wont give you anything more than what you expect for yourself.

I agree that self obsession leads to vanity, if overendulged. But I must insist that self reflection is almost as important if not more than social interaction. There are a couple competing theories on how we develop self identity. Either through suffering and self reflection, or interaction through others. The main difference is who decides who you will become. Do you decide who you want to be, or does society caste your future based on how people, events, etc perceive you.. I personally believe we shape our own destiny based on things we encounter throughout our lives. But there is validity in the contrary. its up for debate.
Anyway, hope this helps a bit. Just know that rebelliousness initiative and self improvement/aren't antithesis,to each other. more as the sides on dice. Versatility ensures a level adaptability.
