sure you can learn mixing at home, but you can't always afford state of the art facilities, industry specialists that are there to help and critique, the human and experience factor is in there. ofc there are other modules besides mixing and recording stuff, so you have to count that in as well. it costs a a small fortune to have a decent setup at home, and a lot of people who do have it, still make shit, because they don't know the theory behind the acoustics and frequencies etc
