Friday night. Fun night. The gang is all here, all the computers set up. You all open Steam and after a few minutes of semantics, you get the game set up. Your brother, and some friends, all have been your crew for ages, and Friday is the evening of way too much soda (beer if you don't mind your kid brother seeing you tipsy), and late night gaming.
Hours and hours of kill-steals, camping, and laughs.
3am, you're running hot. Those brats are getting tired but you're amped, caffeine coursing through your veins.
4am, they're all ready for bed, but you're still pumped. So you retire to your own room (the boys can't be in your room), and continue playing on your computer.
A bird chirps as you're jacked into the audio output. You can't hear it over the music and gunfire as you rack up killstreaks. Your golden SMG barks your own justice across these noobs.
The gunfire quickens, as do the screams of your online enemies. Left and right through the stereo sound they howl in agony, even when you've not shot them. The gunshots increase, and your adrenaline pumps.
You win! You have the final kill for all players to see! You congratulate yourself as you wait in the lobby.
But... you still hear the gunfire.
You still hear the screams.
You hear a window shatter across the hall. A long scream you recognize.
Then, silence.
