im gonna be posting a couple process shots because this is a good pose and everyone should learn from this picture

first step is to do the underlying sketch
here i have gone ahead and filled in some basic values as well
note that the color doesn't really matter here... just looking for contrasts between light and dark
note how i'm not tracing but measuring by eye

all work done in photoshop on a microsoft surface pro 3

second step is to block in the colors
before i start putting anything down, i pick out a few basic colors. you should do this from the color picker by eye to be a ~pro master~ but the eye dropper is useful for quick studies etc
i set aside a light, medium, and dark tone and lay in the dark tone first. i'm using a fairly small brush with 85% opacity for this step. i like high opacity for blocking in steps so i can really push the dimensionality of the drawing.
i worked from dark to light values here, accenting areas of a pinker hue with my pink tone that i picked out earlier. there are distinct areas of the pose that are much lighter (chest, breasts, top of the leg) and if you look closely, have a slightly different hue as well.

here is where it starts to get muddy, and there are a lot of different approaches to this step
the blending and highlighting and shading
i'm fairly new at using digital media, and i dont have any great photoshop brushes or anything so blending is not my forte...
here i'm using just a bunch of different colors to layer and try to smooth out the colors. some areas are more successful, some are not. im not trying to bust out a 100 percent naturalistic piece for this thread, so i gave it a pretty loose pass. here it is with the sketch layered underneath it still.
