They fell hostage to the mmo world of warcraft style of mmo gameplay. Dark scape seems cool though.
Rs used to be good when the sky was black and the game was very nostalgic and dragon armor was top notch. Now its too defined graphics wise its more of a grind than ever.

the minigames and holiday events and the fireworks after leveling up were the best part about runescape and almsot forgot about the rare item status sybolism if party hats easter rings and such. Good days. Also old school login page was more OG

There is a 2007-based server run by Jagex that is pretty much everything you described, but holiday items are not discontinued and there is Jagex-sanctioned RWT and a GE so the economy is fucked.
