are we talking knee replacement surgery? Or just tendon reshaping? Methinks both persons knees started rebuilding themselves after incision, because their bodies knew the knee was split open. All they really do is scrape the tendons so they regrow stronger tissue.

You can make yourself susceptible. The technique takes time but its essence is similar to how a child's brain Has to operate. A child is born and learn a few words, a few concepts, not nearly enough to put the accurate expression of her thoughts into sentences, nor to model the world. So the boy relies on categories associated to those few words and concepts, and any element has to fit these, triggering the category just like in basic pattern recognition. Think of it in numerical language: you have 3 sets and 10 elements, seeing any element signals your brain, your brain amplifies the signal to match the category. Two interesting categories than are: Truth and Falsehood, which should be able to map the entire child's reality. If these are broken, then sure you are not going to be able to assign beliefs, you will have to live without voluntary placebos.
