Two main reasons; first and foremost, religion. Pretty much every major religion rejects suicide unless it's martyrdom. Second, it's generally agreed that no sane person would commit suicide, so trying to commit suicide requires you to be insane. Most people tend to agree that the state should prevent insane people from harming themselves, especially if there's a chance of a cure. This logic doesn't apply to terminally ill people in extreme pain, though.
