Why do scientists say that the eye can be fed oxygen via the capillaries behind it (this is how they are oxygenated when you're sleeping) but at the same say contacts must be removed to allow the eyes to breathe? How can you trust the mechanism to work while sleeping but not with contacts in?

If you leave contacts on for too long, then bacteria and other shit starts to reside there, and quickly it's game over for your eyesight.
