It actually is, and without having license in mind. If the source code is available, you can formally prove the algorithms, which is necessary for some academic stuff (maybe theses, I don't know) and should be necessary for any serious scientific work.

I'm a mathematician who uses Linux for his numerical analysis research.

I only use open source programming environments to make any funding i get easier to manage. this also works well because i won't run into any copyright issues relating to my code come time of publishing.

open source doesn't have to be for everyone (although i think it works well for my own personal and academic use). i believe open source is an important option to have, tough you should not feel obligated to use it, only if you think it could make your job/life easier.
