Although this is somewhat simplified, it's not wrong.

The only explanations I have is that the girl might have a hitherto unheard of (or extremely rare, I might've just never heard of it) congenital condition in which the nerves didn't cross during development, that they inadvertently said the wrong side when talking about her brain or paralysis, or that it's a made up bullshit story.

My money's on #2.
