So how does one keep up to date with going ons in other sciences? I do not have the time study biology in a serious way, but I'd like to know what's currently happening in the field.

>doesn't know the difference between energy and power is
>but wants to be up-to-date on the latest happenings in string theory
Only pretentious idiots want to do that. Learn the fundamentals, the fine order corrections far less important than the gross behavior.

You won't by reading popsci or without serious study into a field.
The most up to date science is journal articles, but this is probably or almost certainly not accessible for you seeing as you requested pop sci. Otherwise I recommend the conversation, lots of articles from a range of topics, generally good science communication and the difficulty level ranges from pop sci to slightly below journal article levels.
