Redpill me on carbon nanotubes.
Are they over-hyped? How much?
oooo look I hav string of nanotubes this will change world, nyet

Early days still, hard to tell.
The potentials are shown to be there but the question is if we can
- make flawless CNT on a macroscopic scale
- position CNT with sub micron accuracy and precision on chips
- control structure of CNT to select between conductor or semiconductor
- interface CNT reliably with other materials.
Schoen was involved in this and all that had to be junked when he was caught pants down. What a mess. And the problem remains hard.
Also: Si has decades worth of head start which will take a long time to catch up with. that is why Si has beaten GaAs in many applications.
Was that pill red enough for you?
All pure carbon based structures are pretty promising, the thing is that making them as perfect as they need to be is extremely hard in a pratical way.
I bet that in about 30 years we'll have every-fucking-thing made of carbon nanotube ropes/graphene sheets or some other carbon formation.
>At the moment
Its a $3000 piece of string
>40 years time
Its a $100 length of rope
>50 years time
Its a $5 piece of rope
>60 years time
