Hi, do you know if Archimedies used Roman Numerals or which counting system to determine his (apparently very accurate) approximation of pi?
yeah
it's a secret
bump. would like some reference or something that describes the numeric system used by Archimedes.

Syracuse was a Greek colony. Greek letters also stand for numbers.
For example 2 + 2 = 4 would be expressed as Β + Β = Δ.

This. And I think fractions were denoted with an apostrophe like this:
λβ'η for [math]\frac{22}7[/math]
Most calculations were done through geometrical constructions though (with a non-graduated ruler and compasses).
