Everything in math is purely an abstraction. With all constructs lacking 'realness', a mathematical use can always be invented. More specifically, though, in applied mathematics there should be a correlation to the physical world in order for something to be useful. Infinity in its most general description is great because it can serve as a placeholder for any value very small or very large. Don't know offhand any reason to differentiate between infinities in applied mathematics however.
