you don't think all the xrays or radio waves get absorbed do you? it's just some fraction, which is dependent on the energy of the photon and material its passing thru.

Photon wavelength determines energy so it's really 'why does this substance absorb photons of energy x' and the answer is because molecules and electrons in it have energy transitions corresponding to that energy.

The absorbent properties differ between materials. For instance, visible light and radio waves penetrate glass quite well, but ultraviolet does not.

not exactly. guitar strings will resonate at some frequency that changes based on the material/thickness, and length. photons will be aborbed/scattered by a material based on the photons energy(frequency) and material. 1 inch of water absorbed more 1 MeV photons than .5 inch water, but 1 inch or .5 inch water will absorb more 1 KeV photons than it will 1 MeV photons

you're trying the analogy game too hard.
that's not how photons interact with matter.
they are absorbed at different rates based on their energy level, and the material theyre interacting with. the water absorption scenario is not some sort of analogy, that's exactly physically what happens.
