If you had to choose just one, what would it be?

Get really good at one thing or be competent in many thing?

Specialization as general knowledge is very impractical (why bother learning something that isn't relevant?)
>>
>>9075068
A good balance is best. Too general and you basically don't know anything, too specialised and you are useless outside of a specific context and you can't use unrelated knowledge to help with that context either, as you have none.
>>

What if the one thing you specialize at is generalizing?

(Joking aside)

We live in a world of redundant generalizers.
Wouldn't the human capabilities as an entire species be maximized if everyone specialized at different things?
>>
Being a generalist isn't about knowing a little bit about everything, it's about unraveling the underlying connections between everything. A generalist looks for similarity and absolutes, rather than living in a haze of how "different" and "outside the scope of my field" everything.

Compartmentalization and overspecialization is a large part of what's wrong with the world. Don't get me wrong, the era has indeed come where generalists are both unneeded, and usually, unwanted. Though the same advantages remain. And any given "spike" in the depth and density of their knowledge is almost always put to far better use than incrementalism and throwing money at nonsense.

Managers need to be good at generalizing though
>>
>>9075369
that's where AI comes in, something that can harness all the knowledge available today and "think" upon it would be extremely useful if controlled.
A sort of interface between the human brain and a machine would be better though, if we learn how to send raw information electronically to a brain from a machine this would be the ultimate learning method
>>

Specialize. If you're a nanophysicist, people will assume you already have a grasp of general physics. The opposite won't be true.
>>
Specialism is relevant dependent on your career.

As >>9076314 said, managers often generalize.

But there is a place in industry for people who dedicate themselves to a single discipline
>>
>>9076308
this amounts to vague claims born from ignorance though

Nah.
