For let us suppose that it were. then in general, we should have that a - 1 = 1 - a for example, which is clearly false.

Confused anons pretend to get around this by addition of negatives, without understanding that in so doing, they replace elements by their negatives, thus changing the operands, and chuffing the whole business.

The point being that subtraction, division, and exponentiation really are noncommutative operations, distinct from their analogues.
