Is the Insular Cortex the seat of Consciousness?
Also, general Neuroethology thread.

the soul is consciousness, the CNS is just there to interpret the data for the soul
>>9070891
There is no evidence that a soul exists.

What is the subjective experience? When does it start? Does all matter have it? What is it made of?
>>9070906
Every function of the brain no matter how complex leads back to homeostasis. Subjective experience is a way for the body to actively control and guide its own homeostasis. Individuals with a stronger sense of "self" or subjective experience, are able to better adapt to their surroundings and produce more offspring. Questioning subjective experience negatively affects an individuals reproductive fitness.

Your genitals are the seat of Consciousness.

Sometimes it feels that way.

Gustatory / vestibular cortex (maybe?)

It's the Pineal gland. Looks like an acorn. It's even been known in a lot of ancient cultures and later reused by thieving catholics etc

why do you think it is out of interest?
>>9071583
Any reasons why you think this?

I very much doubt it, while important it doesn't seem like it has any significant hierarchical control of the nervous system.

Its functions are in line with a lot of the ways that humans define agency and subjective experience. it also is geographically in a very diverse region of the cortex, which means it has to integrate very different sensory stimuli.

Vestibular cortex?

it is a diverse region but so is the frontal lobes and posterior parietal area and probably the anterior temporal lobes too. i get that its important for interoception and emotion but i wouldn't say you it can be extended to all consciousness, nor is it the only area important for emotion atleast. People can experience heavy insula damage and have relatively intact consciousness. surely consciousness is more a property of how networks and subnetworks of the brain integrate and couple together?

this is a very bizarre study because the guy has injuries to what in most literature are the most important parts of the brain for self etc. nonetheless much of the brain is preserved.
