I know that scientific curiosity can be dreadful as it can create things that are able to wipe us all out, but still, it seems like a tradeoff for advancement

I'd probably say it's wrong in the same sense breeding dogs and horses is. It's just not natural, and you can bet there are gonna be some major fuck-ups the first few times.
