Witten is NOT a great mathematician. Without a doubt he is great at utilizing advanced mathematics as a tool for physics(this is what he is supposed to do). Physicists don't do proofs as mathematics is just a tool for them. Well, his Fields medal work is an exception(as it was a PROOF).

Witten was one of the 1st Physicists to Apply the Grothendieck Math (Algebraic Geometry) into Physics (String Theory, Quantum Gravity).

Grothendieck's Math (Algebraic Geometry) were thought as Pure mathematics with no real application.

Until physicists as Ed Witten used Grothendieck into Physics Problems.

Thanks to Witten now every branch of Pure Mathematics is also Applied mathematics.

Since even Number Theory have application in Cryptography. & all remaining branches of math is applicable to either Physics or Economics.
