First rule of this field is go to grad school or expect low wages. Second is to look for a job on the coasts. third is industry makes more money.

A friend of mine just got his PhD and is making $100K+ in the bay area and has a terrific living situation. not everyone wants a house / 5 bedroom apartment. You can live in a 2 bedroom luxury condo in san fran for less that $45K a year.

California is expensive, but its not "my friend is making 100K+ and living in a trailer" expensive. Im currently in CA and its fine.
