Also it becomes an ethics problem at some point and we're going to have to learn to move past that as a society before we can break down that wall

It took at most a few hundred million years for life to begin on Earth, and it only took that long because the planet wasn't exactly hospitible that soon after forming.
All evidence we have points to life forming almost as soon as it possibly could.
