A proposal by Cornell University to release genetically engineered moths with a gene that causes them to eventually die off has been approved for a small area in upstate New York by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Researchers say the engineered insects could be a pesticide-free tool in fighting crop damage caused by the diamondback moth, an invasive species known to destroy cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. The federal agency is giving a green light to the experiment because it says the field trial is unlikely to pose a risk to the environment or human health.

This is very dangerous and could cause moth extinction.

Oh, kill it off, it shouldn't be there anyway. :^)

Imo

The problem isnt any 1 species. If the gmo moths can successfully kill the entirety of the invasive species, so be it. The problem is the gene possibly being able to allow fertile, cross species moths we dont know anything about.

Who gives a fuck..

We should be doing massive gene drives to make mosquito extinct.
>>
>>9025796
What about all the other creatures that eat mosquitos?
>>
>>9025895
They can eat other small insects.
>>

Would their be enough of those small insects.

Even setting other considerations aside, what about the risk of horizontal gene transfer? Isn't that non-zero?

And let's say an unforeseen consequence of their altered phenotype makes them able to outcompete and start to occupy the niches of other moth/butterfly species, since that's basically the idea here. Don't they already have a heightened sensitivity to pollution and climate change on the whole?

why would crispr make them more likely to "gene transfer"

If such insane things aren't happening already why would crispr edited organisms start them? Does CRISPR do something wierd which taints the entire animal?

The only thing so far is offsite mutations, that won't be enough to cause transfer or any sort of weird disease. Keep in mind we naturally have mutations and errors in our genes so it's not something new.

Synth bio or messing with diseases/bacteria/virus are far riskier than this.
