Extinction is natural. It allows those below to rise up to take the extinct creatures place. I love extinction in fact because if it wasn't for the fact dinosaurs went extinct then mammals would have never risen to dominate the planet.

I find the individual suffering that these polar bears must cope with worse as their extinction

Imagine if some kid saw the commercial in the future or the polar bear on the logo and asked "Dad what is that animal?" and they were fucking extinct so you had to tell the little shit that they were this amazing awesome large mammal that once roamed the arctic but now is fucking gone because of global warming and the last of its kind died lonely on little ice floats in the middle of the ocean, they little kids will be bawling their eyes out for weeks....

Seeing the difference now isn't the reason to encode to lossless video (most video files are lossy). What this means is that for each year the video sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting AVIs in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the movies I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed in XviD, they just look like crap. The aliasing is terrible, the grain…well don’t get me started. Some of those films have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. Lossless rips from the same period still look great, even if they weren’t stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to lossless video formats, you may not be able to see the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.
