the ITS in that photo is already being scaled down to SLS size, and won't even fly in the 2020s

the fuck is "Heavy" falcon heavy?
FH reusable GTO is like 8000kg whereas NG is 14000kg
>>

If Falcon 9 used Hydrogen, it would need to double in size.

No point talking about what a paper rocket can throw
Might as well talk about a Falcon double heavy with 5 cores + expanded upper stage could do.

Why do I love ULA so much? It's pretty simple when I think about it. ULA isn't just the best launch provider in the country; they might just be the greatest launch provider of all time. Just imaging the Altas V riding through the skies of Earth, the wind on its fairing, the mighty RD-180 below it. As she rides through the red sky, NASA swoons at her very scent. They know how she smells; the essence of burning RP-1 smell is sold in Orlando under the name of "Space Orgasm." The very nature of ULA is mystery. Could they be playing a deeper game than even Tory Bruno realizes? The answer is yes, ULA has transcended such boundaries as the physical world, and has free will to do whatever they sees fit. However, ULA is filled with such guile, such arcane craft that they does not even use these powers. Why, you might ask? You will never know, for the mind of the ULA is not one that is easily penetrated. ULA rockets are such a force of nature in this realm that nothing can truly touch them, the only thing keeping them bound to this world at all is their will to exist within the preordained boundaries understood physics. ULA is not only beyond the comprehension of us, it exists within a plane of true focus and beauty. Observe the plume of exhaust gasses from this Delta IV, the gorgeous and rippling flames, the gallant fairing, and most importantly, its engines. Her engines, like cauldrons straight from hell, provide the only glimpse into the true machinations of ULA. Do not stare into them. Many good men have gone mad in the attempt. ULA is not just a launch provider, a formless collection of engineers and rockets; they are themselves the binding that holds the word together. Without ULA, Musk the Menace takes over and the entire space industry as we know it crumbles. The Mississippi would stop flowing without ULA, Kessler syndrome would take over in orbit, and the space station would fall without their fiery gaze. These are just of a few of the reasons why I like ULA so much.

If you think they are keeping the old design, answer me this:
Where will they launch it from?
>>
>>9012184

There are no such leaks. It can be launched from pad 39A because the pad was already built to be over sized for even the saturn V. They aren't going to design a smaller version that may as well be a totally different vehicle, only to the have to design yet another vehicle down the road.

They are designing it to be small enough to use 39A and to be affordable, and will use it to launch their internet satellites. They are also doing away with carbon fiber for this version, because they can't get it right.
>only to the have to design yet another vehicle down the road.

Disclaimer: I'm a brainlet and work here as a technician not an engineer.

With that being said, I would expect not having a degree will hurt your chances significantly, but I know for a fact that there have been people on the software side without degrees. I think the hardest part would be getting past the initial HR screen. Once past that most of the department/group heads don't really care as long as you have a proven track record and do well in the interviews.

Know the feeling, chem. tutor works in propulsion and can't say shit. elon watch you always.
>>
>>9012518
Yeah, Elon runs a pretty tight ship and since getting cleared for national security payloads we have people from the NRO/SMC mulling about and making things even more strict.

As an aside, propulsion is probably the best group to be in here, those guys are pretty much all top notch, including the managers.
>>
>>9012522
question:
the f9 can withstand two engine-out situations and still make it to orbit, according to SpX. this happened with CRS1.

But, for heavy stuff to GTO or whatnot, is this still the case? There doesn't seem to be as much margin.
>>
>>9012533
I'm not the best source for this so take what I have to say with a large grain of salt. An engine out situation for heavier payloads would probably not end well. Even with lighter payloads an engine out isn't always going to be recoverable, it still depends on which engine(s) go out and at what stage of flight. There may be some circumstances where you could run stage 2 longer but I'm not sure how likely this is.

This is all very dependent on payload and orbit, and at what point you have a failure and in which specific engine.
>>
>>9012522
yea, he was the the lead developer for the new and improved RP-1. It was great to because he helped me learn chem. using fuels as practice work.
>>
>>9012533
Just means they have to burn longer, unless its a launch where they are pushing the margin all the way to the edge then they should be able to handle 1-2 engine flameouts.

Unless its really early in the launch and it puts them below 1.0 thrust to weight
>>
>>9012549
They have to throttle down the engines later in the flight anyways to keep the G's under control

Engine out on a rocket with 9 engines is not anything special
Worst case scenario they could not try to land the stage, using that margin to recoup whatever extra gravity losses they had.
>>
>>9012550
That's very cool to have access to someone like that as a tutor.

>>9012569
From my understanding center engine out's are more problematic. Also, I believe usually and engine out will require an apposing engine to be throttled down, and due to the restriction in gimbaling this can be problematic depending on which engine goes out and at what stage of flight. Again, I could very well be wrong.
>>
>>9012557
> puts them below 1.0 thrust to weight
Lel. I'm sure there is a margin between reaching the orbit and simply falling down after take-off.

>>
>>9010315
Nobody here works 100+ hour weeks. Even Musk doesn't do that and he splits his time between SpaceX/Tesla. I pretty much live at work and even I get told to gtfo after 70+, and I'm volunteering for it.

On the engineering side you might have the occasional 60-70 hour week, usually pre-launch. But even that is fairly rare and is mostly people doing it by choice to get ahead faster. Most people aren't working more than 50.

On the tech side we have people actually fighting for more hours to get OT pay.

>>9012894
Pay tends to start lower than average but ramps up fairly quickly. Because of the overall org structure, and the fact that we have relatively high turnover, you can typically move up faster than at some of the other traditional aero corps. Salary should be equalized with industry norms at around the 2 year mark, not including any stock compensation which can be a nice bonus. After 2-3 years if you're making less than you would be somewhere else in aerospace that's probably more of a reflection on you than SpaceX.
>>
>>9012915
I know of a couple of guys who went over to Hyperloop One from SpaceX. From what I've heard their management is a total shitshow, particularly Shervin. How did you like it there aside from the hours? What are you up to now?

On one hand you have a rich man making cool rockets.
On the other hand you have a verrrry rich man progressing towards making rockets. BO is currently making a 750,000sqfoot custom rocket factory. Can't really make rockets until you have one of those. They're doing the right thing and starting small.

A non orbital rocket.

When i was 12 I filled a can of Beanswith gunpowder, ignited it and it lifted like 5 meters into the air. Then i filled it again and it happened again.

Technically i predated both Blue Origin and Spacex.

The difference is that what i did and what blue origin does not have any utility whatsoever.

What spacex did is directly capable of delivering payloads into orbit.

Didn't go to space.

>The difference is that what i did and what blue origin does not have any utility whatsoever.
Blue Origin is already selling launch slots for experiments for only $5000, and will start selling suborbital tourism tickets within the year.

>What spacex did is directly capable of delivering payloads into orbit.
recovery has no bearing on orbital payloads, hence why we've been launching payloads into orbit for 60 years
what sets spacex and blue origin apart from the rest is not the launching of payloads, but the recovery of rockets

>Get fucked shill, you have been assobliterdecimated by the sweeet sweeeet sword of reading books all my life, and you better dont screw up with me little itty boy cause there plenty much plenty more of were that good ol stuffy came from, capise little kiddo-diddo?
I have practiced Muay thai for 8 years and after a clean 14-0 I went to BJJ, stopped at brown belt and after 5 consecutive swedish submission wrestling tournament wins at 1st and 2nd place. I started practicing MMA, been doing it for about 6 years now and I already got 17-1 as a record, that one loss was even by DQ (kick to the back of the head while kneeling). Be careful of who you say that shit to, considering that I could knock/choke you and everyone you know clean out.

the intelsat 35e is a ~6800 kg satellite going to a GTO. Usually that takes about a 4 stage Proton-M, or a 2-stage atlas V with a LH2 upper stage and 4 boosters. To do that with a 2 stage, Gas generator RP-1/LOX vehicle is some kind of black magic already.
Mass fraction on the stages is insane; but the performance required for this launch is simply too much to be able to save fuel to land

>Notable because Boeing is the primary contractor of the X-37B, which has until now been launched by ULA, a SpaceX competitor and Boeing partnership.

How embarrassing.

not really. ULA wasn't even allowed to bid on it. the airforce wants to have redundant launch capabilities for the x37b, so they're giving SpX the opportunity to fly it. that way they know if one company can't launch it for whatever reason in the future, they have a 2nd one that will.

It is still kinda funny though.
