the spins of electrons in magnets tend to align because of quantum mechanics so they generate their own magnetic fields when applied an external field (spin is like a magnetic dipole). it doesn't really attract all objects because they're neutral in charge but it attracts some metals because free charge and other magnets because opposites attract lel
