Hey /sci/, I'm starting uni this semester and I've been wanting to study mathematics. However, I've only taken precalc and AP stat so far, no calculus. Will I be fine, or am I a brainlet and going to be fucked?
Start reading about linear algebra and calculus at an undergraduate level.
Have fun
Most people going into uni for math will be starting at Calc II

So I should study up before taking my first calculus class? Or will I be fine if I take one-hitters and jack off to my dojins all summer?
>>9000537
Yeah, I know. That's why I'm wondering if I should just quit while I'm ahead, and major in something more akin to my brainlet status, like geology or biology.

So long as you actually put the effort into learning the material, you should be fine.

Do you like math? Stuff like analysis and algebra. Look at some books like Spivak's calculus, Rosenlicht's analysis, Rudin's principles of analysis, Axler's linear algebra, Hoffman and Kunze's linear algebra, Artin's algebra, Herstein's topics in algebra. See if any of this material interests you since it's more what you'll be doing as a math major than any math you've done before. Don't worry about not understanding it, wanting to understand it is enough.
it takes one semester to catch up from calculus 1 to calculus 2.

You'll be fine. I graduated with honors in pure math and I took calculus 1 first semester. Not every school has AP calculus.

Better hurry up to catch up. Learn Calculus & Linear Algebra quickly.
Don't procrastinate.
If you study quickly now you'll be fine & safe later.
You're fine. I took Cal 1 for the first time in the summer of 2014, didn't even much like math before that. I just finished my first year of grad school, doing great in classes on measure- theoretic analysis, manifolds and algebraic topology.
If you take an interest and devote time outside of class reading supplementary resources and preparing before the semester starts by reading ahead you will succeed.

My friend didn't have calc 12 when she started math. She just graduated with a 4.3/4.33 GPA in Honours Math. You'll be fine if you put in the work.

Is geology a brainlet major?

During Oil industry Booms Geology is well paid.
However during Oil Crysis or Slumps (like now) Geology is very underpaid.
I don't recommend Geology if you don't love rocks for life.
because there are more exciting or lucrative (however harder & more challenging) STEM fields out there such as Physics or ECE

Ya, that was my worst unit in BC Science 10. Took one university class in it to satisfy an elective...big mistake.
