Let's settle it, is he confirmed brainlet?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

are you any smarter than him though?
>>
>>8996181
how did he get a PhD and reach >>8996193 as a conclusion?
>>
>>8996240
PhD in astrophysics, not even a particularly math heavy sub field of astrophysics as well.
>>
>>8996193
There really are five levels of infinity. There's also more than five
>>
He isn't dumb, but people call him the smartest man ever for no reason.
>>
Genuine question here. Is /sci/ full of young folk who huge ego's who think they're hot shit? I get the feeling that the average poster is a teenager.
>>
>>8996383
There are some pretty smart people here. I have seen them solve some not easy problems.

There are also a lot of people who think they're smarter than they are, and some straight up retards
>>
He did manage to go to Columbia, so congrats on that. But he seems very unconcerned with conducting original research. He's become more of a science cheerleader than anything at this point. I think there are a great many dumber people than him, but for a Columbia graduate who discusses science every day, he doesn't participate very much in the process. He's probably in the lower tier of Columbia PhD in that respect, but he was smart enough to get a good career popularizing science.

there was a thread two days ago where someone implied cancer and aging occurred through the same biological mechanism and i almost had a heart attack. this was before he recommended elephants as a model organism for curing cancer (and aging)

Welcome newfriend
Yes, this is also true>>8996397
>>
>>8996167
He's actually very well read and incredibly knowledgeable but he decided to meme with popsci instead of making anything useful out of his intellect. He uses his brain to spout shit we already know.
>>
>>8997198
Stuff that you already know, but the average dumbfuck who denys climate change doesn't know. Bringing science to the masses through a show on fox is a valuable endeavour
>>
>>8997098
I think once he became a celebrity he decided to Bill Nye it and be a spokesperson for science and IMO there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
>>
He's not retarded, but he's not a brilliant mind to be celebrated.
He's a pop scientist who spouts off cool-sounding factoids like a buzzfeed article. That's all.
>>
>>8996383
There are some really, genuinely smart people. There are a ton of kinda smart people who think they're hot shit geniuses when they're just above-average. There's also no shortage of really average and sub-par people here, and many of them think they're at least smarter than average simply because they're knowledgeable and surrounded by people they refuse to think about long enough to see they're no better than them.

No, he's fairly smart. It's hard to say he's a brainlet when he has a PhD and worth a couple million dollars.

He's basically what a majority of /sci/ browsers want to become (minus the memes). At this point it's mostly """purists""", undergrads and jealous wagecucks hating on him.

I've got no problem with him and would do the same thing he's doing (except with doing personal projects on the side) now.
>>
>>8997123

You misread him pretty badly then.
>>
Most people on 4chan don't really understand what he does in his current role and/or vastly underappreciate its importance.

He's basically a PR guy for science, but as i understand it, he's done a fair bit of legitimate science in the past.

Yes, PR is important. His work directly influences public and private spending on scientific research. He's probably gotten rich private benefactors and high level public officials to sign over a minimum of tens of millions of dollars to science and scientific research around the world.

The true intellectuals of society don't write about how unrealistic the new star wars is.

Ed Witten doesn't give his opinion on popular culture because he literally has better things to do.

He's still the director of the Hayden Planetarium and makes content for that (really good content to be honest). That plus being a celebrity, he doesn't need to do boring research work anymore.

He seems to have a lot of European admixture. Just something I've noticed.

As for his IQ? Hard to say, but three standard deviations from the mulatto mean (93) seems reasonable. So about 138.

This.

Honestly, he's not a bad ambassador to normals. And, from what I've heard of him, he's not a bad guy. I've been around scientists that are just absolute snobs who I wouldn't invite to anything.

what's bill nye doing there?
Bill nye is creating trannies wtf
>>
>>8997229
Yeah, I agree with this. The only people who really think he's stupid are people who are envious of his fame or disagree with him politically and hate that he uses his fame to push his politics.
IMO he has the same problem that famous science advocates like Nye or even Dawkins have. The fame goes to their heads, and they start to think that their opinions are more important than they are. They decide to give their stance on topics that are clearly outside of their field because a large enough amount of the public has treated them like general authorities, but even a slightly educated person can see through it (if they want to).
>>
He isn't the smartest guy ever but he is still extremely smart. What idiots and underage here don't understand is that it is more important that he is a good science communicator than that he is the smartest scientist ever.
>>
So, are you atheist?

>>
>>8996383
That's how it everywhere on 4chan, what's new.

>Come to board
>Lurk for a few weeks
>Begin to understand basics
>Parrot basics and then segue off into your own retarded bullshit
>Have fun for a month, then leave

Rinse and repeat. I'd confidently wager that at least half of any board's poster population is at stage 4 of that process at any given time.
>>
>>8996167
He's more qualified to talk about science than like ~90% of the posters here.
>>
>>8996193
>there are five "levels of infinity"
>infinity
>infinity + (x>0)
>infinity + * (x>0 x=/=0)
>infinity - (x<0)
>infinity - * (x<0 x=/=0)
what is wrong with that?
>>
>>9004061
He was referring to cardinalities, of which there are infinitely many

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinality
>>
>>8996167
I consider him to be a performer who happens to like popsci. Much like Bill Nye.

>>8996181
Tests and degrees are only given to obedient people. There's not much brain power needed for obedience.
>>
>>8996383
I'm 43 and still think I'm hot shit. Sorry to blow out your theory. Have your balls even dropped yet, nutlet?
>>
>>8996397
>I have seen them solve some not easy problems.

Knowing your way around google & wolfram alpha really is a patrician skill isn't it?
>>
>>9004157
>being 43 and still using meme insults like nutlet

Young folk having a big ego is understandable. At your age that's a sign of dementia.
>>
>>8997198
His memesci brought many people into science, especially young people.

That alone is a very useful thing, trust me you will not be impressed by a sperg, autist conference about a scientific discovery - but if black science guy presented it to you - that would be entirely different.

Science field needs people like him, it's not like his presence consumes resources in the field... or diminishes the power of research.

Let's be open minded there are multiple teachers around the world, that have studied their field and never participated with a breakthrough or scientific paper but they helped shape scientists that done so.

Humans need mentors, motivators to keep going in a direction.
>>
>>9004750
The people who need popsci to become interested in science will not be the ones making scientific discoveries

>>8996167
No, in fact he is one of the smartest man alive.
>>
He is smart for a nigger.
>>
>>8996167
He has published papers, some fairly influential, and he is legitimately capable - in astrophysics.

Most normal physicists, if asked about something well outside of their field of study, will tell you they don't know. Hell, most won't even know their entire field, and won't claim to. doesn't make them brainlets, it just means they're focused on their particular field.

I think the problem with Pop-sci figures is that they regularly get pressed on questions well outside their expertise, and in order to remain "that there guy which knows stuff," they can't give a crowd a null answer. they end up giving overly ambiguous answers that lead to public speculation, or making outright false statements.

same is true of parents with kids, that kind of thing.
>>
>>9004771
no, but the people who need popsci vote for politicians that approve our funding.
