Depends. It's great for symbolic calculations, which will from my experience often work in maple and crash mathematica. Avoid maple for anything numerics related. If you need symbolic calculations on a larger scale, use magma (if availaba).

Mostly Groebner-basis stuff, or at least calculations inducing the Groebner- or F4-algorithm. I'm a little baffled as well, maple running on java and stuff, but it has happened not once, but regularly. On different machines, on at least two different HPCs, and not only I had that problem. I guess mathematica is simply kind of overrated.
