When is humanity going to make space stations and domes?
When are we conquering space?
>>
>>8983142
70% of this planet's surface is ocean.

Conquer the oceans. It's a lot cheaper to float something than it is to rocket it into orbit.
>>
>>8983142
we've already had like 10 space stations to date and conquest of space is curently underway

do you have any other amazing questions, we've never had before?
>>
>>8983151
When will the common man be able to live on one of this space stations?
>>
>do this first before doing that, yet this has nothing at all to do with that

KYS whoever thinks this. Also, jello babies.
>>
>>8983153
when it won't cost $20,000 to put two pounds of living meat up there and $4,000,000,000 a year to keep it up there
>>
>>8983153
space literally is a shithole. tell me one good reason its better than earth.

fucking retard.
>>
>>8983174
earth in already in space you dumb negro
>>
>>8983174
you are away from the shithole of earth
>>
>>8983174
You are far away from flatearthers
>>
Space stations are for fucking sci-fi meme nerds.
>>
>>8983177
holy fuck are you saying we aren't on earth? because we fucking are. and there is a fucking distinction between earth and space.
holyyy fuck. this board is fucking trash.
>>
never. the "pro science left" is going to have us stuck on earth learning the proper pronouns for 47 "genders". In between meals of socialist produced bugs and rice.
>>
>>8983319
You have to go back.

>>
>>8983332
sorry, but leaving earth to colonize mars is a sign of class privilege.

you'll be forced to stay on earth.
>>
>>8983319
>In between meals of socialist produced bugs and rice.
Ignoring the rest of your pointless masturbation, insects for eating is something that we really should be looking into. If it got even a fraction of the effort that goes into developing high-yield crops, it could substantially reduce the cost and environmental impact of food production.
>>
>>8983344
their unappetizing and trigger allergies with people who have shellfish allergies.

people just need to learn to eat better beans for their protein. not soy, soy is one of the worst beans.
>>
Warhammer 40k style existence when?
>>
>>8983346
The "unappetizing" thing just seems like a problem that can be solved with more work.
I'd not heard about a connection with shellfish allergies. Do you have a link discussing that?
>>
>>8983319
only 47 genders? Don't be so close minded. There are at least 8000
>>
>>8983344
yes goy! Eat bugs for protein and save the planet! I'll be eat my steak in my shekel fortress because I'm a protected class!

source?

>>
>>8983346
Technological advancements in meat alternatives are far more likely to change people's diets than statistically baseless austerity stances of what people should "just do."
>>
>>8983174
We are talking about artificial environments so it's only up to you to make it good, it can be really better than earth, the real problem is the cost.
About the reason, I think it could be political.
We can't build nations anymore on earth, in space we still can.
>>
>>8983142
GAS THE ROCKETS.
SPACE WAR NOW.

>>8983142
The schadenfreude addicts who run the world's nations will only allow human habitation off-world when it is possible to prevent the colonies from seceding.
>>
>>8983142

We made the first airplane 100 years ago. What are you expecting exactly?
>>
When we achieve full international communism.
>>
>>8983142
>When is humanity going to make space stations

Probably we'll start in sometime around 1971.

>and domes?

We'll start building domes some time prior to 11,700 BC, I predict.

>When are we conquering space?
Never -- there's too much of it. We may eventually get around to exploiting it for living space and resources and such, at least on a local level. Or we may not -- I feel somewhat pessimistic about it these days.
>>
>>8983142
As soon as we find a way to replace the obsolete rocket into space method of space travel.
>>
>>8984290
T. Unemployed faggot with no talent

never, beyond paid tours as a curiosity, it's literally useless.
>>

This is correct. You are living in space station right now, kinda.

Whenever one group gains control of huge portions of the Earth with enough resources and lack or rivals to focus on that.
>>
>>8983490
>OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!!!!
>>
>>8983174

Enough resources in space to solve all of Earth's socioeconomic problems, technically, and also technically, enough resources to give each person a cubic kilometer of volume to live in with literally anything they want--and still have quadrillions of kilometers of volume available. After satisfying every last human being on this planet.

A single nickel-iron asteroid, if it could be mined and refined to 75% efficiency, could yield enough metals to crash the world economy; and there are billions of these fuckers free-floating in the main asteroid belt. Even more in the Kuiper belt, and EVEN MORE in the Oort cloud.

There's enough water ice on the moon, Mars, asteroid belt, Ceres, Europa, some of Jupiter's moons, a huge part of Saturn's rings, and the Oort cloud to let humanity thrive for thousands if not tens of thousands of years.

I think we as humanity should establish a foothold on Mars, and from there jump start a seed/ship industry via the asteroid belt. Find a reasonable sized candidate, and spend the next decade hollowing it out and using the mineral resources from inside it, to reinforce the rock into a tiny little space station.

Take a 1km by 1km capsule-like asteroid. If you hollowed it out and left about 50 meters of rock and reinforced bulkheads around the entire rock, and dedicate 200m in the front to administration/command & control and 200m in the back for engines, reactors, and additional industry. Then build a giant fucking light shaft that runs the full length of the capsule, and then you plant trees and create lakes, streams, and forests which say takes up about half the surface area. You'd be left with about 6,785 kilometers to work with.

That's slightly larger than this city: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rouyn-Noranda | Population of ~45k. Let's say we reduce that by 40% to account for hydrophonic facilities & rec. facilities. You could safely assume that a 1km by 1km capsule asteroid could support 27k people.

No reason not to go.

OK so we will be able to send robots and (((criminals))) to build and live in massive space prisons. But why would you want to live out there otherwise?

because those very stations you are building can also be tailored and climate controlled to be what ever your personal paradise would be.
You want to live in a tropical resort environment 24/7 without any of the mosquitoes or other annoying bugs? you can with a space habitat, cause there's nothing to fuck up that climate in the vacuum of space that you can't protect against

space engineering is a wet dream for anyone that likes building shit and living in shit they've built
>>
>>8987483
Couldn't we have those "tailored and climate-controlled" buildings on Earth for like 1/100th of the cost of making them in space ?
>>
>>8987633

It has to be in space otherwise his escapist fantasy wouldn't be complete.

No
a climate controlled habitat on earth would be outrageously expensive, as construction of the thing would be a massive pain in the ass, due to you having to deal with structural stability concerns during the whole project
then once it is completed, you'd be paying out the nose for maintenance, as if your goal was to have the climate of Cuba in northern Finland, you'd need to deal with your heat escaping and moisture freezing, the moisture also causing structural damage in the process from good ole rust and ice fractures
Space lets you negate all that, since you don't have external bullshit making life difficult, the costs will be minuscule in comparison

Shitposter doesn't get a (You)
>>
We could do it today. But do you know how incredibly expensive that would be? If there were any payoff for putting so much effort into something like this, it would have already happened. But of course, there is no real reason to do this except "omg so fucking cool". If you think it's so cool and that it would be worth your time making it happen, then just do it yourself.

>things have not happened now, thus they will never happen
no (You) for you

Numerous businesses and organizations are working on it right now, they're currently perfecting their methods of getting shit into space for not unholy costs
Later they'll work on construction methods in space
and lastly, they'll be working on resource acquisition and refinement in space

these things, they take time, and there are steps to follow to not fuck yourself with unnecessary costs

shit I was talking was maintenance related for the habitat
The radiation you can shield against with anything from hydrogen tanks to lead shielding, the micrometeorites you can shield against with plating
there is shit in space, definitely, but it is easier to protect against the few things that exist than all the bullshit on earth

there's more complexity to it than that, but they are things that we can either figure out solutions for, or already have solutions for due to ISS research
