Lenses and optics question

So I'm trying to figure out this issue with lenses.

I want to place a single lens, or small, simple stack of lenses a short distance from a flat surface with a word written on it, such that the word is out of focus when an observer looks through the lens. Then, by moving the lens closer to the surface, the word comes into focus.

One: Is this possible for an observer at any distance from the rear of the lens?

Two: How would this be achieved, either for an observer at any distance or at a distance of, say, 1 meter?
