It relies on the fact that if it was irrational it would lead to a contradiction because it would imply that there was a smallest integer
if .9 repeating was not equal to one, it would imply that the real numbers are countable because you could find two consecutive real numbers. At that point, it would be the same as the integers but with different symbols
