Can someone explain?

centromere and telomere dna is basically useless
telomere is what gets cut when the cells divide continously
centromere is where the chromosomes bind to eachother when the cells divide
you can basically put anything in those sequences
don't worry about it
What happened to being able to have one's personal genome sequenced for under $1000? A few years ago it was projected by some to even be as low as $10 by now. Did progress stop?

I payed a 100 usd Ca. for one of those heritage tests.
>>8948888
That's not full genome by a long shot.

Market forces bruh. People care about genealogy and diseases, and insurance companies would probably love to get a monopoly on the latter.
>>8948138
That's 1k (1000) not 10

There's no legal privacy protections for it. It's possible for an employer, landlord, etc.. to require a copy of your results if you've had your genome sequenced.
At this point you'd be kind of dumb to do it.
Besides, unless you're looking for specific mutations it's entirely useless.
>inb4 /pol/esmokers who don't understand genetics and the sorts of inferences one is able to make from them.
>>8948138
How much does it cost today?

The 23andme service charges 199 usd for a genetic analysis
First off that's a shity explanation. Heterochromatin and euchromatin are found throughout the genome, and while centromeres are definitely heterochromatin they're not the only heterochromatin.
Second, the reason we can't sequence those regions is because sequencing relies on stitching together reads to form a consensus sequence. That procedure is heavily dependent on having enough unique features across all your sequence reads that you can tell whether two reads are from overlapping regions or adjacent regions. Centromeres and telomeres are highly repetitive. It's basically impossible to construct accurate alignments unless you have insanely long reads, which only became feasible in the last few years.

>centromere and telomere dna is basically useless
>goes on to state why they are not useless
Found the retard!
