Why can't we use RTG generators in automobiles?
>>
Because they're feeble.
>>
>>8926650
Power density is shit. Also crashes, but mainly the shit power density. RTGs are being considered for nuclear powered ocean environmental monitoring robots. Now jnstead of lasting a year, they will run for 10 years. The NRC has ok'd similar radioisotopes for oce monitoring devices so it might actually work
>>
>>8926667
ICE monitoring nor oce
>>
>>8926664
Feeble? In what way are they feeble if they have been able to power satellites for countless years.
>>
>>8928539
Satellites don't really require a lot of power. It's mostly for electronics. RTGs run for a long period of time, they are like super AA batteries, you can't move a car with that. They also work by letting radioactive decay into the environment, which is not a big issue in space or in the ocean, but you don't want millions of cars doing that.
>>
>>8926650
So you literally want people driving around with a nuke in their car? What the fuck is wrong with you?
>>
>>8928600
Its not a nuke, it has material that could be used in a nuke, but in an RTG generator there is no implosion mechanism that could cause a nuclear reaction.
>>
>>8929411
Besides with such a generator you would never need to refuel your car.
>>
>>8929411
>it has material that could be used in a nuke
i'm sure that will bode well. after all people are completely rational and reliable as libertarianism and ancap have shown us
>>
>>8930837
If car companies can acquire materials that can make nukes, I doubt people actually capable of making one would have a hard time getting some.
>>
>>8926664
Like ur mind:-)
>>
>>8926650
Do you REALLY want to put nuclear energy in the hands of the public when we've got Islamic scumcunts everywhere these days, trying to blow up every fucking thing that isn't some regressive 15th century shitshow?
>>
>>8931047
Yes I do, personally I think the public are ignorant idiots when it comes to anything nuclear.

>Medicine
>Smoke Detectors
>Sanitation
>Security
>Electricity in the form of Reactors and RTG generators.

The Muslims of course will need to be purged before nuclear technology can go mainstream.
>>
>>8931070
>>medicine
highly regulated and controlled
>>smoke detectors
contain practically nothing

>>sanitation
cobalt 60 sources are highly regulated and controlled

>>RTG generators
are very rarely used, but it is a concern that abandoned Russian RTGs could be used for terrorism:
http://bellona.org/news/nuclear-issues/radioactive-waste-and-spent-nuclear-fuel/2003-11-two-strontium-powered-lighthouses-vandalised-on-the-kola-peninsula

A number of incidents with old RTGs have occurred when metal scavengers have dismantled them:

Some lumberjacks actually got radiation poisoning when they found an unshielded strontium 90 source out in the woods and slept with it for heat.

>Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator Generators
>>
Because it's dangerous
>>
>>8926650

An RTG wouldn't be able to power a car that you'd want to drive.

The Curiosity rover weighs as much as a car but has a top speed of 0.14 km/h. This is because the RTG powering the rover barely puts off enough electricity to power a lightbulb.

That's not to say a radio thermal heat engine couldn't power a car; you'd need enough plutonium in one spot to generate at least a couple hundred kilowatts of heat, which would use a working fluid to run a turbine generator to generate electricity. The actual drive train has to use electricity because with a direct drive the wheels would not stop turning. Anyway, being a heat engine, the working fluid will need a radiator capable of rejecting kilowatts of heat continuously while the generator has enough plutonium to run the car.

The last problem is that the half life of the plutonium would cause the power output to slowly ramp downwards until your car wouldn't be able to move faster than walking speed. This would probably take a couple years, but during those years you'd have to deal with owning a car with always-on radiators you could use to fry food that got slower every day.

RTGs produce a few dozen watts of power, for decades. They're only useful in space for missions that can't use solar power because they're either going where it's unreliable (the surface of Mars) or too weak to be useful (beyond the orbit of Jupiter). Everywhere in space from Jupiter's orbit inwards, solar is by far the superior option. Solar panels can provide kilowatts of power forever, unless damaged by space debris, but it isn't like an RTG is immune to hyper-velocity rocks.

>>8930817
Try every year or two, mate. RTG's start weak and get weaker with time, as more and more plutonium isotope fuel decays away.
