Personal conjecture: recursion is one of the most unruly concepts in all of mathematics. we have so little theory to concretely explore recursion, just mostly the ability to turn the crank and see where a program takes you. Shapes like the bifurcation diagram and other common features of chaos are some sort of deeply embedded structure in continuous recursive systems (in the sense that the numbers are continuous, not the steps used to compute them). On one hand, it's reassuring that there is some mathematical structure that seems to repeat. On the other hand, wtf math. srsly. Why are these the shapes that are important. Honestly I don't think math will ever have a satisfactory answer. Such is recursion...
