A process which usually improves fitness is currently doing the opposite. This is still evolutionarily plausible because the process is beneficial on average.

Elaborate? Which process here is beneficial on average?

It doesn't seem terribly beneficial to obsess over an inanimate object this way. In any case, it illustrates that the Humboldt penguin is a very visual creature. Presumably, the cutout doesn't smell, sound, feel, or taste like an actual penguin.
The cutout does trigger something primal in this animal. Maybe it's just something different that stands out from the rest of its habitat. Perhaps that penguin is alone in its enclosure, and penguins tend to huddle together in nature, while the cutout is its closest example to huddle with. Maybe he's subjugated himself to the cutout as an alpha penguin.
I mean, the Humboltd penguin has had deviant behaviors before. It's actually most popular in recent history for having had multiple instances where homosexual couples would get together to raise young as a family unit.

Wait a second, if the penguin likes an image of an anthropomorphized penguin isn't that like the penguin equivalent of being a furry?
Penguins are fucking weird animals. They do a lot of goofy weird shit like walking off in a random direction to their death or standing still until they starve to death or starting homosexual relationships. It's not surprising that they could become attached to a drawing.
Truly penguins are the wojak of animals

Not to mention they were initially retarded enough to somehow end up in Antarctica in the first place where they had to develop survival mechanisms that border on the absurd.
Although I would argue that Penguins are still more intelligent than Zulus

Don't forget the fact they lost the taste buds that would allow them to taste fish a long ass time ago.
